Under the tropical zodiac, the Sun is in Aries between March 21st and April 19th, entering on the Spring Equinox. Aries is one of the three fire signs and in traditional astrology the ruling planet is Mars. The exaltation (place of awareness) for Aries is in the Sun, the fall (place of weakness) is in Saturn, and the detriment in Venus. In Greek legend, the symbol of the ram is based on the Chrysomallus, the flying ram that rescues Phrixus and his twin brother Helle, the children of the Boeotian king Athamas. Phrixus and Helle were hated by their stepmother, Ino. She hatched a devious plot to get rid of the twins, roasting all of Boeotia’s crop seed so they would not grow. The local farmers, frightened by famine, asked a nearby oracle for assistance. Ino bribed the men sent to the oracle to lie and tell the others that the oracle required the sacrifice of Phrixus and Helle. However, before they were killed, Phrixus and Helle were rescued by a flying ram with golden wool that was sent by their natural mother, Nephele. While in flight, Helle fell off the ram and drowned in the sea. Phrixus survived a journey to Colchis, where King Aeëtes (son of the Sun God Helios) took him in, treated him kindly, and gave him his daughter Chalciope in marriage. In gratitude, Phrixus sacrificed the ram to Poseidon and gave the king the Golden Fleece of the ram, which Aeëtes hung in a tree in the holy grove of Ares in his kingdom, guarded by a dragon that never slept. Sharing many of the same traits as their representative Ares (fierce God of war), Aries are believed to have personality traits such as power, ambition, action, boldness, confidence, and courage. They are energetic, expressive, straight-forward, passionate, and impactful. Aries can be impatient, moody, stubborn, self-centered, pushy, and sometimes overly competitive. They are sometimes impulsive, easily angered, and can be very aggressive. Their impatience may cause them to miss out on opportunities. In relationships, Aries is attracted to the other Fire signs Leo and Sagittarius. Aries is also compatible with Libra, who can help them maintain balance.
