Copaiba Balsam essential oil is well suited in formulas for chest and muscle rubs, calming massage blends, skincare and aftershaves, or as a versatile fixative middle to base note in soaps, cosmetics, and perfumes. For the skin, the essential oil is great for increased collagen synthesis, prevention of wrinkles and signs of aging, reduction of the appearance of scars and stretch marks, acne, rashes, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, seborrhea, other anti-inflammatory issues, varicose veins, and chapped and dry lips. It helps soothe and soften skin. When applied to regions with skin melasmas, the essential oil may help whiten, especially when mixed with other essential oils. It also has antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, antiseptic and disinfectant properties, helping to kill germs. For this reason, the oil has been used to help insect bites and stings, burns and wounds. It may also help reduce swelling. The Guarani people of the Amazon use it to heal wounds after battle. The oil is sometimes used for its deodorant action, as well as for sun protection. Copaiba Balsam oil can also help problems with arthritis and tendonitis. The essential oil has an analgesic effect that can help loosen muscles and help relieve nerve, muscle and joint pain. Some believe that Copaiba Balsam essential oil may help relieve pain more than topical CBD. For use on the skin, mix a few drops of the essential oil into a carrier oil or lotion and mix thoroughly. It can also be mixed into shampoos, conditioners and scalp oils to balance greasiness and help mycoses, dandruff, and seborrhea of the scalp. It helps leave hair soft and shiny. In aromatherapy, Copaiba Balsam is soothing and great for balancing mood and reducing anxiety. Copaiba essential oil and oleoresin contain large amounts of beta-caryophyllene, a molecule that interacts with cannabinoid receptors in your skin. This causes skin cells to produce beta-endorphin, one of the happiness hormones. This makes it a wonderfully soothing addition to massage oils. Used in an infuser, it can help promote restful sleep. The scent blends well with other woody and resinous oils like Frankincense and Cedarwood or Sandalwood, with citrusy aromas, vanilla, and florals like jasmine and ylang-ylang. Copal resin was considered a gift from the “god of lightning”, who passed his power on to the tree. The Copal has long been used in ancient Maya and Aztec ceremonies as a ritual offering to the gods. The Mayans burned the resin at sunrise to honor the Sun. The holy book of the Mayans says the divine god of the Earth extracted Copal resin from the Tree of Life and gave it to humans as a gift, making it a heavenly sacred resin. It is still used by a number of indigenous people in southern Mexico and Central America during sweat lodge ceremonies as well as sacred mushroom ceremonies. When burned, Copal elicits mentally uplifting and calming effects. Ceremonially, the resin is placed on hot coals to burn as an incense for spiritual cleansing. Copal is excellent for protection, especially when combined with frankincense and myrrh. It works well as a smudge and creates a mellow, magical atmosphere. It symbolizes the transformation from the physical to the supernatural. The rising smoke takes prayers to the heavens and the gods. Copal is burned during ceremonies to communicate with the spirits of the dead and is commonly used in Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) rituals. It is frequently used in ritual purification of both objects and people. Copal carries an energy that is particularly good for love, house blessings, dedications, meditation, protection, celebration, solar energy, and creating sacred space. The trees also grow in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Sierra Leone, India, Sri Lanka, and other places. When tapped, in the same manner as Sugar Maple trees, they yield a think clear and colorless oily resin that thickens and darkens upon contact with air. The balsamic resin, similar in consistency to Sandalwood oil, is collected for several days after which the tap is removed and the hole sealed with clay; the tapped trees are left to rest for three years between extractions. The abundant resin (up to 40 liters per year) may be filtered for use as lamp oil or a fuel for diesel engines, hence the nickname ‘diesel tree’. Copaiba Balsam is preferred by some to the distilled oil, as it doesn’t require branches or whole trees to be cut, but more importantly, it contains vital diterpenes that do not appear in the essential oil.
