It is one of the most popular of all tropical fruits. It is a strong antioxidant and immunomodulator. Mango is cardiotonic, boosting blood flow throughout the body and may help low blood pressure. These properties may also help with erectile dysfunction. Mango may help wound healing due to the nutrients they contain, including vitamin C, vitamin A, and phytochemicals. Vitamin C and Vitamin A can help with collagen formation, which is a key component of connective tissue that is important for wound healing. Low levels of Vitamin A can delay wound healing. The phytochemicals have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. And the flavonoids can increase growth factors that promote granulation tissue formation. Mango peels contain higher amounts of the phytochemicals than mango pulp. One study found that mango leaf extract can also promote wound healing by increasing collagen formation and epithelial tissue growth in damaged skin. The high levels of Vitamin C found in mango can help boost the immune system, as well as support healthy cognitive and neurologic function. Some studies have suggested that mango and mango leaf extract may have antidiabetic properties, possibly improving insulin sensitivity and facilitating glucose uptake. Eating a small or moderate amount of mango fruit may help with diarrhea and symptoms of dysentery because they contain potassium, which can help restore the body’s potassium stores that are depleted during diarrhea. They also contain fiber and water, which can help with digestive issues like diarrhea and constipation. However, mangoes are also high in certain carbohydrates that when too much is eaten can actually worsen diarrhea by drawing fluid into the bowels and increasing gut muscle contractions. Mango can also help anemia. When the fruit or juice is consumed regularly, it can significantly raise hemoglobin and may help increase the efficiency of iron absorption. Both iron and folic acid can be found in mangoes. The beta-carotene in mangoes can help the body produce enough Vitamin A to help support eye health and vision. Some say that eating mango before bed can help promote better sleep because mangoes contain Vitamin B-6, which helps the body produce serotonin, which helps the body produce melatonin, a hormone that helps peaceful sleep. Inhaling the fumes from burning mango leaves is believed to help relieve hiccups and symptoms of throat infections. Mango juice is used in heat stroke, by possibly helping cool the body down naturally and alleviating symptoms of dehydration and fatigue. Mango oil can help nourish, moisturize, and improve the elasticity of hair as well as help prevent breakage. It can be used to treat damaged hair and promote hair growth and healthy scalp. The lightweight oil makes hair soft and shiny without weighing it down. Mango oil can also help nourish and hydrate skin, making it feel soft and supple. Rich in Vitamin A, it can help improve skin elasticity. Mango oil can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help ease symptoms of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. The beta-carotene can also help protect the skin from sun damage. Mango oil is a carrier oil and does not require dilution. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Mango is a large evergreen tree that grows to a height of 10-45 meters, is dome shaped with dense foliage, typically heavy branched from a stout trunk. The leaves are spirally arranged on branches, linear-oblong, lanceolate – elliptical, pointed at both ends, the leaf blades mostly about 25-cm long and 8-cm wide, sometimes much larger, reddish and thinly flaccid when first formed and release an aromatic odor when crushed. The inflorescence occurs in panicles consisting of about 3000 tiny whitish-red or yellowish – green flowers. The fruit is a large drupe, but shows a great variation in shape and size. It contains a thick yellow pulp, single seed and thick yellowish – red skin when ripe. The seed is solitary, ovoid or oblong, encased in a hard, compressed fibrous endocarp. It is native tropical Asia and has been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for over 4000 years and is now found naturalized in most tropical countries. They thrive in warm, humid environments with a lot of sunlight. Mango trees need at least 8 hours of sunlight a day, but seedlings may need some protection from the sun until they are established. If growing indoors, place in a south-facing window. Mango trees prefer temperatures between 40°F and 70°F, but can tolerate a wider range. In cooler climates, protect from cold winds and rain. Mango trees can grow in almost any type of well-draining soil, from acidic to alkaline. You can improve the soil before planting with a citrus and fruit plant food and soil improver. Mango trees need regular watering, especially when they are young or flowering and fruiting. I growing a mango tree in a pot, use a narrow but deep pot to accommodate the tree’s long tap root. You can use a free-draining compost like cactus compost, and move the tree indoors in the winter. Young mango trees may need to be staked to protect them from strong winds, especially if growing in an environment with high winds. Fertilize the mango tree at least twice a year, in the spring and summer, with a citrus and fruit fertilizer. Spread mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and protect the roots. Contraindications & Toxicity: Mangoes contain a protein similar to latex and may cause allergic reaction for people with latex allergies. Mangoes should be avoided by people with diabetes as they are high in natural sugar, which can spike blood sugar levels. Due to high fiber content, high consumption of mangoes can cause diarrhea. Some varieties of mango can cause difficulty with digestion. Mangoes can interact with certain medications, including aspirin, anticoagulant drugs, antiplatelet drugs, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
