Medieval European soldiers wore Amethyst amulets for protection in battle and from danger, believing it has healing powers and keeps the mind calm and cool. During the Renaissance, Amethyst amulets were engraved with the image of a bear for protection. Amethyst alleviates stress, is calming, eases fearfulness, wards off guilty feelings, raises hopes, is uplifting, and brings peaceful vibrations. This makes it a helpful stone when grieving the loss of a loved one. It is believed to help with mental clarity, sharpen the mind, enhance mental and psychic powers, increase intuition, improve memory, and provide wisdom. Description:  Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz. In the Middle Ages, it was considered a symbol of royalty and is used to decorate English regalia. Until the 18th century, Amethyst was included in the cardinal, or most valuable, gemstones (along with diamond, sapphire, ruby, and emerald). But since the discovery of extensive deposits in locations such as Brazil, it has lost most of its value. It is now considered a semiprecious stone. The violet hue is attributed to irradiation, impurities of Iron, and in some cases other transition metals, and the presence of other trace elements. Amethyst is a three-dimensional network of tetrahedra where the silicon atoms are in the center and are surrounded by four oxygen atoms located at the vertices of a tetrahedron. This structure is rigid, hard, and resistant to weathering. Amethyst is found in primary hues from light lavender or pale violet to a deep purple. It may exhibit secondary hues of either or both red and blue. High quality Amethyst is found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Far East. The ideal grade is called “Deep Siberian” or “Deep Russian”, and is exceptionally rare. However, Amethyst is found in many locations around the world including Marabá, Pau d’Arco, Pará, the Paraná Basin Rio Grande do Sul Brazil, Sandoval, Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Artigas Uruguay, Kalomo Zambia, Thunder Bay Ontario, Africa, Spain, Argentina, Russia, Afghanistan, South Korea, Mexico, and the United States. The largest Amethyst mine in North America is in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Amethyst when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a light purple or white candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly.
