Used topically, Camphor Essential Oil soothes inflammation, redness, sores, insect bites and stings, itching, skin irritation and rashes, acne, sprains, and muscle aches and pains. It is a common ingredient in creams and ointments for pain and itch relief. Camphor oil (especially when combined with Lavender) is often used to help symptoms and pain related to, as well as prevent the spread of, severe lip dryness, chapped lips, and cold sores. Camphor has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-infectious  properties and is used to protect against contagious viruses. They have broad, strong branches and glossy green leaves. When crushed, the leaves release a strong menthol odor. However, Camphor trees can grow quickly and develop poor structure, making them more likely to decay or fail in storms. In the United States, Camphor trees are found throughout Florida, Georgia and western Texas. They readily invade dry, disturbed areas, such as roadsides. They also invade natural areas such as flatwoods, floodplains, lakes, streams, spring shores, and scrubs. In the spring, sow a few healthy Camphor seeds directly where you want the tree to grow, or start them in small pots of well-drained soil. Or plant semi-ripe cuttings in the summer. To propagate by cuttings, choose a healthy branch, use clean shears, and cut below the node. Either root your cutting in water or plant directly in soil. They grow best in full sun or partial shade, in fertile sandy soil with a pH between 4.3 and 8. Keep the soil moist but not wet, and be patient as germination can take months. Transplant the seedlings when they are about a foot tall. Water newly transplanted trees, but once established, they are drought tolerant. Camphor trees are resistant to many common pests and plant diseases. “Camphor” is produced by passing steam through the pulverized wood chips and condensing the vapor given off.
