Description:  Selenite is a variety of Gypsum, composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (meaning it has two molecules of water). It is formed when sulfate and calcium-rich saltwater evaporates. The crystal is the transparent colorless variety that occurs in crystals or crystalline masses. The name of Selenite gemstone is derived from Latin selenites, ultimately from Greek selēnítēs líthos, which translates to “moon stone”. It got its name because people historically believed the mineral waxed and wanted with the cycles of the Moon. However, this gemstone is not the same as or related to the crystal known as “Moonstone”. Gypsums occur on every continent and is the most common of all the sulfate minerals. It is formed as an evaporative mineral, frequently found in alkaline lake muds, clay beds, evaporated seas, salt flats, salt springs, and caves. It is frequently found in conjunction with other minerals such as copper ores, sulfur and sulfides, silver, iron ores, coal, calcite, dolomite, limestone, and opal. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Selenite when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a blue or white candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly. Recharge as needed by placing in the sunlight or moonlight for a few hours, or by burying in the earth for a day or two. Selenite should be handled with great care and should not be worn regularly as it is easily prone to damage. With a Mohs hardness of 2, it is soft enough to be easily scratched with a fingernail. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Do not use heat or steam to clean. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or sunlight.
