Like the Aztecs, the Pueblo, Navajo and Apache tribes cherished Turquoise for its amuletic use; the Apache believing the stone affords an archer dead aim. A great gemstone for hunting, it also prevents a rider from falling off their horse and protects from harm in battle. In the ancient Persian Empire, the sky-blue gemstones were earlier worn around the neck or wrist as protection against an unnatural death. If they changed color, the wearer was thought to have reason to fear the approach of doom. In many cultures of the Old and New worlds, this gemstone has been esteemed for thousands of years as a holy stone, a bringer of good fortune or a talisman. The oldest evidence for this claim was found in Ancient Egypt, where grave furnishings with Turquoise inlay were discovered, dating from approximately 3,000 BCE. Today, the crystal is believed to bridge the earthly and heavenly realms, while helping you stay grounded during spiritual practices. Even today, Native American cultures believe that Turquoise creates a direct connection to the sky. The Goddess Hathor is associated with Turquoise, as she is the patroness of Serabit el-Khadim (a locality in the southwest Sinai Peninsula, Egypt), where it was mined. Her titles included “Lady of Turquoise”, “Mistress of Turquoise”, and “Lady of Turquoise Country”. Turquoise is also a stone in the Jewish High Priest’s breastplate, described in Exodus chapter 28. The stone is also considered sacred to the indigenous Zuni and Pueblo peoples of the American Southwest. The pre-Columbian Aztec and Maya also considered it to be a valuable and culturally important stone. Turquoise is a Throat Chakra stone, aiding with open communication and self-expression, as well as helping to overcome the fear of public speaking and with making a confident and eloquent speech. Some modern healers also believe the gemstone to be detoxifying of alcohol, drugs and other poisons or pollutions of the body. Description:  Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gemstone for millennia due to its unique hue. The robin egg blue or sky blue color of the Persian Turquoise mined near the modern city of Nishapur, Iran, has been used as a guiding reference for evaluating Turquoise quality. Colors however vary from white to a powder blue to a sky blue and from a blue-green to a yellowish-green. The blue is attributed to idiochromatic copper, while the green may be the result of iron impurities (replacing copper). The word Turquoise dates to the 17th century and is derived from the Old French Turquois meaning “Turkish” because the mineral was first brought to Europe through the Ottoman Empire. Turquoise deposits are widespread in North America. Some deposits, such as those of Saguache and Conejos Counties in Colorado or the Cerrillow Hills in New Mexico, are typical supergene deposits formed from copper porphyries. The deposits in Cochise County, Arizona, are found in Cambrian quartzites and geologically young granites and go down at least as deep as 54 meters (177 feet). The southwest United States is a significant source of Turquoise; Arizona, California (San Bernardino, imperial, Inyo counties), Colorado (Conejos, El Paso, Lake, Saguache counties), New Mexico (Eddy, Grant, Otero, Santa Fe counties) and Nevada (Clark, Elko, Esmeralda County, Eureka, Lander, Mineral County and Nye counties) are (or were) especially rich. Arizona is currently the most important producer of Turquoise by value. Several mines exist in the state, two of them famous for their unique color and quality and are considered the best in the industry. Nevada is the country’s other major producer, with more than 120 mines which have yielded significant quantities of Turquoise. There are also rare blue-violet and valuable transparent or translucent Turquoise that are found in Virginia. Turquoise was among the first gems to be mined, and many historic sites have been depleted, though some are still worked to this day. These are all small-scale operations, often seasonal owing to the limited scope and remoteness of the deposits. Most are worked by hand with little or no mechanization. However, Turquoise is often recovered as a byproduct of large-scale copper mining operations, especially in the United States. Iran has been an important source of Turquoise for at least 2,000 years. In Iranian architecture, the blue Turquoise was used to cover the domes of palaces because its intense blue color was also a symbol of heaven on earth. In Iran, Turquoise is mined in the region of Nishapur, the 6,601 foot mountain peak of Ali-mersai near Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan Province, Iran. There are also mines in the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, Semnan province of Iran, and Kerman province of Iran. China has been a minor source of Turquoise for 3,000 years or more. Other notable localities include Afghanistan; Australia (Victoria and Queensland); north India; northern Chile (Chuquicamata); Cornwall; Saxony; Silesia; and Turkestan. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Turquoise when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a Yellow candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly. Recharge as needed by placing in the sunlight or moonlight for a few hours, or by burying in the earth for a day or two. Being a phosphate mineral, Turquoise is inherently fragile and sensitive to solvents. Perfume and other cosmetics will attack the finish and may alter the color of Turquoise gems, as will skin oils, as will most commercial cleaning fluids. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may also discolor or dehydrate Turquoise. Cosmetics, including sunscreen and hair spray, should be applied before putting on Turquoise jewelry, and they should not be worn to a beach or other sun-bathed environment. After use, Turquoise should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth to avoid a buildup of residue, and should be stored in its own container to avoid scratching by harder gems. Turquoise can also be adversely affected if stored in an airtight container. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Do not use heat or steam to clean. Avoid prolonged exposure to water or sunlight. Avoid contact with hard surfaces, and take care not to subject to hard bumps or sharp blows.   Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
