Description:  Carnelian is a variety of the silica material chalcedony colored by impurities of iron oxide. The color can vary greatly, ranging from pale orange to an intense almost-black coloration. The red variety has been used as beads since the Early Neolithic in Bulgaria. The first faceted Carnelian beads are described from the Varna Chalcolithic necropolis (middle of the 5th millennium BC). Carnelian was recovered from Bronze Age Minoan layers at Knossos on Crete in a form that demonstrated its use in decorative arts; this use dates back to approximately 1800 BC. Carnelian was used widely during Roman times to make engraved gems for signet or seal rings for imprinting a seal with was on correspondence or other important documents, as hot wax does not stick to this gemstone. Significant amounts of Carnelian are found in Yanacodo Peru, Ratnapura Sri Lanka, and Thailand. It is also found in the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, Uruguay, Siberia Russia, and Germany. Most Carnelian purchase today is sourced from India. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Carnelian when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of an orange candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly.
