Some people consider Cypress a gloomy tree, but it has been cultivated since prehistoric times for its fragrant wood. Its stately, tall, narrow form is often found in formal gardens. It’s a classic tree in Tuscany, where it is planted along country roads to yield a fragrant path shaded from the hot sun and protected from winds. In ancient Greece, statues of the Gods were carved from Cypress wood. Cypress trees produce resin that can be gathered from incisions in the bark, or the needles can simply be harvested and added to incense and potpourri. Men are especially fond of its scent, which is refreshing, restorative, calms anger, helps with concentration, and creates feelings of security. Cypress essential oil is commonly used for warts. A study found that Cypress essential oil was effective against HPV (herpes simplex virus type 1). Cypress is commonly recommended to help acne because of its antimicrobial effects. Applying topically may reduce the severity of acne by killing bacteria. Cypress essential oil has been used to relieve muscle pain, muscle spasms, and muscle cramps. Cypress essential oil is commonly added to natural deodorant. The essential oil is steam distilled from needles and twigs. This essential oil is ethically sourced from Spain. Historical Uses: calm, anger, soothing arguments, concentration, warts, herpes, cold sores, acne, antimicrobial, antibacterial, muscle pain, muscle spasms, muscle cramps, body odor Mystical Attributes: In many cultures, Cypress is planted around graveyards. It is sacred to Hades (“the unseen”), the god of the Underworld. Cypress is the tree of Hades, and especially the Phrygian goddess of earth and caves, Cybele/Kybele. She ruled over the natural world, wild animals, dark magick, and revenge. Cypress represents life after death and comfort for grief. Cypress should be used at times of crisis, especially at the death of a friend or relative. It eases the mind and allays grief if worn or carried to funerals. In Europe, coffins were built of cypress and funeral garlands and wreaths were made of its branches to represent eternal life. The name Cypress comes from the Greek Cyparissus, who accidentally killed a pet stag. He prayed to Apollo, his lover, to allow him to grieve forever for the loss, and the God turned him into a tree that weeps. Its resin forms tears on the bark, which would be planted around graveyards. Since the cypress is a symbol of eternity and immortality, the wood has long been carried to lengthen life. Throw a sprig of cypress into a grave to give the deceased luck and love in the hereafter. To make a healing wand of cypress, slowly cut, over a three-month period, a branch from a cypress tree. This is known as a “healing stick” and should be used only in healing rituals. Make passes over the sick person, touch the afflicted area and then plunge the tip into a fire to cleanse it. The root and cones of the cypress are also healing, as is the greenery when dried and burned as incense. A mallet of cypress wood was once used to discover thieves. Mystical Intentions: loss of a loved one, calling ancestors, grief, calm, comfort, security, soothe anger and arguments, funeral and burial rites, dark magick, war magick, black magick, revenge, wild animal magick, eternal life, immortality, magick wand making, health and healing, catch a thief Smell: A medium, warm, evergreen, slightly spicy, woody, herbaceous aroma Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Cypress is a Mediterranean tree and so can be grown outside only in the warmest parts of North America (zones 7-11, down to 10F/-20C). It can be grown in large containers. It is often a topiary plant, grown in small pots as bonsai and brought into a cool room in winter. The tree likes dry, hilly, and mountainous places, in hot countries. It is always green. Once Cypress is established, in 2-3 years, it is tolerant of salt and drought, but it will get much larger if it has enough water and nutrients and will be better able to resist disease and bugs. It needs good drainage or the roots will rot. It can live to be over 1000 years old. Sow Cypress outside, barely covering, in fall or winter. Or cold-stratify (wet a paper towel, wring out, and put the seeds between the folds of the towel; put in a baggie and keep in fridge for a month). Seeds will germinate in 2-3 months after the weather warms to 20°C. Watch out for damping off with the seedlings. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun where temps do not go below 10°F/-20°C (zones 7-11). Or plant in a container and keep in a cool room in winter, not watering much. This tree gets 40-60 feet high and 3-6 feet wide but grows slowly and does not need to be pruned. It is good for screening, lining drives, topiary, and bonsai. Cypress has thick, straight, long stems; upon which grow many slender branches that grow up towards the top, so that the Cypress tree is not broad, but narrow, growing to a great height. Branches bear short twigs. The fruit is round, about the size of a plum. The fruit is ripe in September, at the beginning of winter. The bark of the cypress tree is brown. The timber yellowish, hard, and thick. It has a pleasant smell, especially if near a fire. Contraindications & Toxicity: Cypress may cause allergic reactions, including rash and redness, pain or burning, swelling, itching, and hives. Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding.
