Tulsi (Holy Basil) ~ Our Tulsi Green Tea is a blend of Krishna Holy Basil, Rama Holy Basil, and Vana Holy Basil. Tulsi is one of the most popular beverages in the world and has been used since at least 3000 B.C. to promote longevity, improve mental functions, and prevent disease. Within Ayurveda, Tulsi is known as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature” and “The Queen of Herbs,” and is revered as an “elixir of life” that is without equal for both its medicinal and spiritual properties. Within India, Tulsi has been adopted into spiritual rituals and lifestyle practices that provide a vast array of health benefits that are just beginning to be confirmed by modern science. This emerging science on Tulsi, which reinforces ancient Ayurvedic wisdom, suggests that Tulsi is a tonic for the body, mind and spirit that offers solutions to many modern-day health problems. Tulsi is perhaps one of the best examples of Ayurveda’s holistic lifestyle approach to health. Tulsi tastes hot and bitter and is said to penetrate the deep tissues, dry tissue secretions and normalize kapha and vata. Daily consumption of Tulsi is said to prevent disease, promote general health, wellbeing and longevity and assist in dealing with the stresses of daily life. Tulsi is also credited with giving luster to the complexion, sweetness to the voice and fostering beauty, intelligence, stamina and a calm emotional disposition. In addition to these health-promoting properties, Tulsi is recommended as a treatment for a range of conditions including anxiety, cough, asthma, diarrhea, fever, dysentery, arthritis, eye diseases, otalgia, indigestion, hiccups, vomiting, gastric, cardiac and genitourinary disorders, back pain, skin diseases, ringworm, insect, snake and scorpion bites and malaria. Modern research has revealed that Tulsi has anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal activity that includes activity against many pathogens responsible for human infections. Tulsi is one of the most commonly prescribed herbal remedies for hair loss. It strengthens the hair roots and improves blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles. The psychotherapeutic properties of Tulsi have been explored in various animal experiments that reveal that Tulsi has anti-anxiety and anti-depressant properties, with effects comparable to diazepam and antidepressants drugs. Animal studies further reveal that Tulsi enhances memory and cognitive function and protects against aging-induced memory deficits. Similarly, in human studies, Tulsi has been observed to reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Within Ayurveda, Tulsi is commonly recommended as a preventive measure to enhance the ability to adapt to both psychological and physical stress and therefore prevent the development of stress-related diseases. Tulsi has a calming effect that leads to clarity of thought, along with a more relaxed and calm disposition. It has a warm, green, sweet and spicy clove-like flavor and aroma. Amla Berries (aka Indian Gooseberry) ~ Amla fruit (aka Indian Gooseberry) has several culinary and herbal medicinal uses. It is rich in vitamin C. A single Indian Gooseberry contains about 600-800% of the daily value (DV) of vitamin C. A 3.5 ounce serving of fresh berries contain as much vitamin C as 20 oranges. Just 1 teaspoon of Indian Gooseberry powder provides 1,500 units of antioxidants (more than the average person consumes in an entire week). It is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on Earth. The fruit, leaves, and seeds are used in traditional Chinese, Thai, and Indian medicine and have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Due to its high vitamin C content, Indian Gooseberry may help prevent cellular damage, thus slowing the natural aging process. It may prevent the breakdown of collagen. It is believed to be a powerful natural remedy for hair loss. Indian Gooseberry is high in vitamin E, which has been shown to enhance hair growth. Indian Gooseberry is also used to protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The berries are rich in vitamin A, which is key to improving eye health. It may also help protect from conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other eye infections. Human studies have shown that supplementing with Indian Gooseberry resulted in lower triglyceride and total LDL (bad) cholesterol, as well as an increase in HDL (all good) cholesterol. It may also help reduce high blood pressure by acting as a vasodilator. It is said that less than a teaspoon of Amla powder works just as well for reducing bad cholesterol levels as Zocor. People commonly use Indian Gooseberry for persistent heartburn. The fiber may also help regulate bowel movements, which may relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. The soluble fiber content has been shown to slow the rate the body absorbs sugar, reducing blood sugar spikes. Amla fights against free radicals that can damage brain cells. In animal studies, Amla fruit has shown to be effective at killing lung, liver, cervical, breast, ovarian, and colon cancer cells. In test-tubes, amla introduced to cancer cells cut the growth rate in half. However, this has not been studied on humans. The magical intentions of Amla include enlightenment, health and healing, new beginnings, and growth. Ashwagandha ~ Ashwagandha is a warming herb. As a member of the hot pepper family (Solanaceae), this west Indian shrub is used in Ayurvedic medicine as balancing, especially to the nervous system. Consuming the ground roots is said to create feelings of warmth and energy without nervousness. Ashwagandha has been used historically to help stress, anxiety, relaxation, energy, athletic performance, memory, concentration, sexual stamina, infertility, impotence, blood pressure, healing, rejuvenation, aging, recovery, balance, mental disorders, and sleeplessness. Fo-Ti (aka He-Shou-Wu) ~ In China, it is commonly called Ho-Shou-Wu (which means “black-haired man”) in reference to the man of the same name who lived during the Tang dynasty period who allegedly consumed Fo-Ti daily and lived until the age of 132 years—or 197, or 256, depending on the version of the story. It’s used to treat a variety of ailments and has been linked to a number of health benefits, such as healthy aging, longevity, and virility. Many people take it to promote general good health, especially in old age. However, this herb is also used to treat various health conditions, such as diabetes, hair loss, heart disease, constipation, and cancer. In test tubes, Fo-Ti has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antibacterial, and antitumor effects. It is also used to treat headaches, muscle soreness, high blood pressure, tuberculosis, and infertility. The biological compounds found in Fo-Ti may also positively affect blood cholesterol levels and improve conditions caused by an age-related decline of the nervous system, such as Alzheimer’s. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found “surprisingly high estrogen activity” in Fo-Ti. This suggests it might provide a potential estrogen replacement source for menopausal women. One study that tested 32 plants used for menopause in traditional Chinese medicine found that Fo-Ti had the greatest estrogenic activity. Studies show that Fo-Ti appears to transition hair follicles from damaged, dormant stages into rejuvenated, fast-growing ones that resemble hair growth patterns in the young. One study even found that taking Fo-Ti prevented and reversed hair graying. Shampoos containing the herb help combat hair loss and graying. The magical intentions of Fo-Ti include prolonging youth, longevity, reversing old age, and helping memory loss. Imbolc translates to “in the belly”, and celebrates the goddess Brighid, a deity of the hearth, fire and fertility. In Christianity, Imbolc was adopted as Candlemas. And in American popular culture, is known as “Groundhog Day”. It is the half-way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, a time to plan the future and consider what you want to plant in the coming year. Decorate your altar or table with a statue of Brighid, and ribbons in the colors, white, red, pink, green, silver, and yellow. Use stones like amethyst, bloodstone, garnet, onyx, ruby, and turquoise; and herbs like snowdrops, angelica, basil, bay laurel, and celandine. Fill vases with flowers and branches of leaves like willow, crocus, daffodils, jasmine, lavender, and calendula that symbolize new growth (be sure to thank them and leave an offering if cutting or uprooting). Make a Brigid corn doll poppet dressed in white and St. Brigid crosses from straw, reeds, willow, corn, or grasses and flax thread. Display on the altar, dinner table, over the hearth, or over your front door. Ask her to bless your home with growth and abundance. Gather seven light green and white candles, Anointing Oil, Purification Herbal and Salt Water, Imbolc Incense, and salt. Incorporate symbols like the cow, sheep, and swan. Spring clean the house. Clean out your wardrobe and donate items you no longer wear to a charity. Rearrange or rid yourself of any items in the home that cause you anxiety or feel uncomfortable in their location. Tie ribbons to a nearby tree and meditate on your wishes for positive growth and healing for yourself and those who are meaningful to you. Then open the windows and doors, light a smudge incense, and starting in the East watchtower working toward the North, use a feather fan to clear unwanted energy from your home. While clearing each room, sprinkle anointing water while asking Brighid to bless your home and bring purification. Go for a nature walk and look for signs of spring while being mindful of and thankful for the return of the Goddess and the dawn of a new season. Close your eyes and inhale the fresh cool spring air. Find a path with a spring or running creek. Cleanse your crystals in the clear water. Clean the area around it of rubbish and dead wood. Sit on a blanket on the ground and lean back against a tree that speaks to you, slowing and focusing on your breathing. Light a cleansing candle and close your eyes. Feel the growth beneath you and imagine the life of the earth rising through the roots, absorbing its energy from your feet to the top of your head. With each breath, imagine the earth’s energy and growth melting through you, releasing the old and inviting the new. Meditate for as long as you need. When returning home, light a fire in the hearth and oil lamps, and celebrate Imbolc by hosting a candlelight medieval dinner with roasted meats, lamb, hearty breads and baked goods, winter vegetables, seeds, dried fruit, butter, milk, cheese, old fashioned desserts, and Imbolc Tea. Ask your friends to each bring a dish to share, a poem to read, or a song to play/sing. Share with each other those circumstances that you want to leave behind, as well as what you plan to renew your future. At twilight, cast your salt circle and ask the goddess Brighid to bless and watch over you. Consecrate the circle and all the items in it with your purification water. Anoint your candles with the oil. Light the incense. Then light the candles while saying, “Although it is dark, I seek light. I call upon fire to bring new life (repeat three times). So mote it be.” Take three deep breaths. Focus and meditate on the glow of the candles. Concentrate on thoughts of warmth, purification and renewal. When finished, snuff out the candles, vacuum the salt and discard away from the home. When you’re ready to relax and restore, enjoy a hot herbal bath and warm cup of herbal tea.
