The ripened fruit looks like a large coffee bean or acorn. Jojoba oil is made from crushed cold-pressed seeds of the jojoba fruit, is waxy and very similar to the natural sebum oils of our skin. Chemically, jojoba oil is 98% wax, so scientists consider it to be a liquid wax rather than an oil. It is usually a golden or light yellow color and doesn’t spoil because of its high level of antioxidants. Jojoba oil absorbs into skin faster than other oils, moisturizes, is nontoxic, nonallergenic (made from seeds, not nuts), and won’t clog pores. About 79% of the vitamins in jojoba oil are vitamin E. The oil is used to help many skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, skin flakiness, and acne as well as for scalp conditions. Jojoba oil is often used to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It may also help ease sunburn, prevent scars and help small wounds heal more quickly. It is an excellent skin softener and is used in lotion, hair products, cuticle oils, and other personal care items. Hair products made with jojoba can soften and protect hair fibers, helping to prevent breakage. Jojoba oil also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it good for preventing skin infections. Jojoba oil is a carrier oil and does not require dilution. Historical Uses: anti-inflammatory, acne, blackheads, sunburn, emollient, moisturizer, anti-bacterial, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, dry skin, itching, skin irritation, anti-aging, wrinkles, skin sagging, damaged hair, abrasions, cuts, grazes, scrapes, wounds, scar prevention Mystical Attributes: Jojoba is a good carrier oil for potions of reconciliation. Use it in rituals for rekindling broken relationships, making up after a fight, and renewing friendships. Mystical Intentions: reconciliation, friendship, making up after an argument, mending relationships, renewal, harmony, atonement, conflict, discord, forgiveness, new beginnings Smell: Fresh, unprocessed jojoba oil has a very faint, earthy, or nutty scent. The refined oil is odorless and colorless. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Jojoba is a gray-green woody shrub that is native to the southwestern United States, Baja California, and Mexico. It is also now grown some other countries like Argentina, Australia, and Egypt. It grows best in hot and dry climates with well-drained soil. They can tolerate salinity and poor-nutrient soils, but frost can damage or kill them. Jojoba plants can take around eight years to mature. Jojoba can be planted by direct seeding or transplanting seedlings. Direct seeding is faster, cheaper, and easier. Seeds can be germinated in sand or vermiculite at around 80°F. Seedlings should be transplanted when they are 6-12” tall and 8-10 weeks old. Plant in full sun to light shade, as too much shade can cause them to grow spindly. Their leaves grow at an angle to the sun, allowing them to get the most sun in the morning and afternoon while protecting from the midday heat. Jojoba plants don’t need much water, and you can usually leave them to rainfall after they are established. However, supplemental watering of 2-4 times a month can help maximize production if rainfall is low. Overwatering can cause plants to become weak and leggy. Jojoba plants don’t usually need much fertilizer, but nitrogen can help increase growth, especially in the first year. The plants are wind pollinated, and female plants produce oil-rich seeds from flowers that are pollinated by male flowers. In the Northern Hemisphere, pollination usually occurs in February and March, and in the Southern Hemisphere, it occurs in August and September. Jojoba oil is made from crushed cold-pressed seeds of the jojoba fruit, which is easy to extract because about half of each seed is made up of oil. Contraindications & Toxicity: CAUTION: Jojoba oil is not for ingestion or internal use. It is for external use only. Do not use if allergic.
