When dried, the “nut” can be heard rattling inside when the shell is shaken. The fragrant nutmeg is sometimes used whole in potpourri. Nutmeg is finely ground when used as spice. The warm and slightly bitter flavor of nutmeg goes a long way, so only a little is needed or it will overpower foods and beverages. Nutmeg is a baking spice used to flavor breads, cakes, cookies and pastries. It is also used to season game meats, soups, and various beverages. Nutmeg is a traditional spice used when cooking for Western holidays, especially during the autumn and winter. It has a warm, inviting aroma and flavor that creates a sense of hearth, home, coziness, and loving feelings. Nutmeg relaxes tight muscles and relieves muscle aches and pains, muscular injuries, and menstrual cramps. It is also believed to help relieve rheumatism and arthritis. Since ancient times, nutmeg and its oil were being used in Chinese and Indian traditional medicines for illnesses related to the nervous and digestive systems. Nutmeg encourages the appetite and improves digestion. The spice also helps with gastrointestinal spasm, nausea, and upset stomach. Nutmeg is believed to help ease restlessness, nervous tension, and insomnia. The shell of Nutmeg seeds is used to make mace. Historical Uses:  relaxing muscles, ease muscle ache, relieve muscle pain, relieve muscular injury, ease menstrual cramps, rheumatism, arthritis, nervous tension, restlessness, nervousness, sleeplessness, insomnia, indigestion, gastrointestinal problems, increase poor appetite, nausea, upset stomach Mystical Attributes:  Nutmeg is frequently burned to bring luck in games as well as luck in the courtroom. A whole nutmeg seed can be carried to bring luck during all games of chance. This effect was historically enhanced by creating an amulet of the seed by drilling a hole in the nutmeg and filling it with Mercury and then stopping up the hole with wax or glue or by carrying the seed wrapped in green cloth, or both (this process is not recommended as mercury is highly poisonous and even exposure can be dangerous). Nutmeg can be carried as a charm to encourage a favorable decision in court cases and success in other legal matters. Wrap it in a purple cloth or string it on a purple string for this purpose. A Nutmeg in the pocket will help to ensure good luck while traveling and a pleasant journey. An old Creole spell suggests that sprinkling nutmeg in a woman’s shoe at midnight will encourage her to fall madly in love with you. Other ways of using nutmeg to encourage another’s love is to share a beverage flavored with nutmeg with them, or to wear a fragrance featuring nutmeg oil. Nutmeg can be added to beverages drunk before meditation and divination to enhance clairvoyance and clear sight and to encourage visions. A massage oil containing nutmeg essential oil or nutmeg butter may also be rubbed into the temples for the same purpose. Communicating with beings on a higher vibrational level can be enhanced with nutmeg. It enhances perception, helping to see what is below the surface of a given situation, detect lies, and find the truth. The taste and smell of Nutmeg promotes feelings of warmth, coziness, and safety. It is used in spell-work to help resolve arguments. Nutmeg essential oil is an ingredient in Money Drawing Oil which can be used to anoint candles and other items during spell work aimed at bringing money to the household. Powdered nutmeg can also be added to money drawing powders which can be sprinkled over coals, candles, and other items during money-drawing spells. Mystical Intentions:  luck, luck in competition, luck in court, luck in legal matters, justice, protection while travelling, attraction, attracting love, love spells, enchantment, meditation, focus, concentration, visions, clairvoyance, divination, perception, detecting lies, finding the truth, communicating with spirits, psychic ability, finding the truth, attracting money, fortune, prosperity, wealth, warmth, safety, comfort, settling arguments Smell: Has a medium, rich, warm, sweet, spicy, woody aroma. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Nutmegs are evergreen trees, native to the rainforest of the “Spice Islands” of Indonesia. The tree from which they are produced is not more than 40 feet in height, with smooth, grayish-brown bark, which is green on the younger branches. The alternate leaves are oblong-ovate, acute, entire, smooth, and dark-green. Nutmeg tree flowers are very small and unisexual. Nutmeg tree fruit is smooth and yellow, each resembling a pear grooved by a longitudinal furrow. The fruit contains a single erect seed about 1 1/4 inch long, the nucleus of which is the wrinkled nutmeg, and the crimson, fleshy, webbed covering being the mace. Nutmeg trees grow in warm, humid tropical climates in full to part sun. Nutmeg trees prefer well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter, with a medium to heavy texture. The preferred method of propagation of nutmeg trees is grafting. Epicotyl grafting, approach grafting, and patch budding have proved successful — with epicotyl grafting being the most widely adopted method. Air-layering is an alternative method, but because of its low (35-40%) success rate it is not ideal. The fruit grows like a walnut with a thick outer husk, and is harvested when the nutmeg seeds are ripe; the outer red mace is separated from the nutmeg seed and dried for later use. The scarlet color and fleshiness of mace when fresh will dry yellow and brittle. Store dried mace powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. The fruit of this is called in Latin nux mystica, and in shops nux moscata. Contraindications & Toxicity: CAUTION! Essential oils are not for ingestion or internal use! Nutmeg should be used cautiously, as ingesting large amounts can cause hallucinations.
