Common garden sage is typically used for this purpose.** Sage is a Mediterranean herb in the mint family. It has a sweet and savory aroma. The name “Sage” literally translates to “prophet” or “wise one”. The scientific name Salvia derives from the Latin word Salveo, “to heal” or “to save” (or to salve). It has long been used in healing. An old proverb says “Why should a man die who has sage in his garden?” The Romans regarded sage quite highly and much sacrifice and ceremony was associated with its harvest. Historical Uses:  stress, tension, nervousness, anxiety, moodiness Mystical Attributes:  White sage (Salvia apiana) is sacred in many Shamanic and Native American belief systems and is used for smudging, and other ceremonies to purify the body. Smudge sticks made of white sage are often found in New Age shops and kits are heavily marketed to modern magical practitioners. For ceremony and ritual, the white sage leaves are dried and either smoldered over hot coals or are rolled and tied with thread to make smudge sticks. Sage has been long burned to purify and cleanse a space and to ward off evil. The ancients burned dried sprigs of sage in temples and during religious rituals. The Greeks and Romans wrote that the smoke imparted wisdom and mental acuity. An old English custom states that eating Sage every day in May will grant immortality. In the tenth century, Arab physicians said that sage brought about immortality, or at the very least, a long and healthy life. It is said that where sage grows well in the garden, the wife rules and that sage will flourish or not depending on the success of the business of the household. Sage is used in magical workings for longevity, wisdom, protection from negativity, protection from illness, and the granting of wishes. To make a wish, write your wish on a sage leaf and sleep with it under your pillow for three days and then bury it. Sage is also believed to help build emotional strength and alleviate the sorrow of the death of a loved one. Burn sage at funeral and remembrance ceremonies to help relieve the grief of the mourners. Add sage to mojo bags to promote wisdom and to overcome grief. Emotionally, sage helps build strength and courage, and as an Earth herb, is an important aid in grounding oneself. Burn leaves to gain guidance from your spirit guide. You can use the leaves of this whole herb to make your own smudge sticks or to wrap around magical objects to protect them from negative energies. Sage is easily tinctured for magical use in 151 Rum or high proof Vodka. Mystical Intentions:  smudge, cleanse, purification, banishing, consecration, blessing, ward off negative energy, protection from evil spirits, protection from illness, wisdom, immortality, longevity, eternal life, wish making, emotional strength, emotional healing, sadness, grief, coping with loss, negative thoughts, funeral and burial rites, sorrow, strength, courage, grounding, contacting your spirit guide, uplifting, psychic awareness, psychic protection, psychic ability, clairvoyance, insight, intuition, visions, introspection, divination, domestic harmony, happiness, peace, knowledge, meditation, tranquility, balance, comfort, concentration, focus, fear, gratitude, guidance, altar incense, ritual incense, ceremony incense, reversing and deflecting curses, spirituality, stability, warmth, making up after an argument, past life reading Other Uses:  An infusion of the leaves is said to straighten hair when used as a final rinse. Smell:  An intense, herbaceous, camphorous, earthy, musky, fruity and floral aroma. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Unfortunately, white sage can be difficult to grow in captivity outside of its native range, so is largely wild-crafted. It is a perennial shrub plant, native to the Mediterranean region, that also thrives in the dry heat of Southwestern US and Mexico, particularly along the coast of Southern California, most notably in Baja. A high degree of aromatic oils make the entire herb very fragrant, a fact that becomes readily apparent when the leaves are brushed against or rubbed. Sage plants reach approximately 2 feet in height and width. Like other sages, white sage produces small flowers that range in color from white to light purple. It takes 3 years to produce flowers, and it flowers in late spring or summer. Sage leaves are oblong, ranging in length and width up to 2.5 inches by 1 inch. Leaves are grey-green colored, and wrinkled on their top sides; and due to the existence of many short soft hairs, nearly white underneath. Sage grows on sunny dry banks and stony places. It is usually found in limestone areas and often where there is very little soil. Sage requires a very well-drained light sandy soil. Surface sow seeds in a greenhouse in March or April, keeping the seeds moist by covering the tray with plastic. Germination usually takes place within 2 weeks, but can take up to 35 days. Only about 35% of seeds typically germinate at a time. For seeds that do not germinate, keep them at 39°F for 2-4 weeks, then put back to 70°F. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots, in sandy and somewhat dry soil, and in full sun. Plant them out in early summer. Sage is a perennial in warmer areas where winters don’t get much below freezing (zones 7-10) and can stand heat up to 110°F.  In colder areas, grow it in a pot and bring it indoors during the winter. Once established, it is easy to propagate from half-ripe wood cuttings. The leaves are best harvested before the plant comes into flower, or after flowering, or from May through September. Dry the leaves in a loose paper bag. Store whole dried sage leaves, cut dried sage leaves, powdered sage leaves and other varieties in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 2 years.     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
