An edible herb (raw or cooked) like most mints, spearmint has a variety of culinary and practical uses. The leaf, fresh or dried, is used to flavor beverages, most notably the mint julep cocktail and the sweet tea enjoyed in summer in the southern U.S. Spearmint is also tinctured and used to make a flavoring extract for baked goods and beverages. The dried leaf is also a common ingredient in tea blends and is used to season salads and foods, especially Middle Eastern dishes. Powdered spearmint is used to make a variety of cosmetic preparations, as well as herbal toothpaste, tooth powder and mouthwash. An oil from the leaves and flowers is used as a flavoring in candy, gum, ice cream, drinks and commercially prepared hygiene products (toothpaste, mouthwash, etc). Spearmint has been used as an alternative medicine for centuries on many different continents. The herb tea made from the leaves has been used for fevers, bronchitis, chills, cramps, chronic gastritis, common cold, headaches, indigestion, morning sickness, motion sickness, nasal congestion, nausea, halitosis, painful menstruation, and various minor ailments. An infusion of the leaves can help ease most headaches, stimulate the appetite, and aid digestion. Externally the stems are crushed and used as a poultice on bruises. The essential oil of the leaves is a great rub for stiffness, muscle soreness and rheumatism. Both the essential oil and the stems are used in folk remedies for cancer. A poultice prepared from the leaves is said to maybe remedy tumors. Spearmint plants repel insects, rats, mice and was formerly used as a strewing herb (thrown about). Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Spearmint is native to Europe and southwest Asia but has become naturalized throughout the United States and Canada. Its sometimes hairless, sometimes hairy stem and foliage grows to about 2 feet high, with a wide-spreading, fleshy, matted, creeping underground rhizome. The plant’s square-shaped stem is a trademark of the mint family of herbs. Spearmint leaves are generally 5–9 cm in length and 1.5–3 cm in width. The leaves are short-stalked, lance-shaped, wrinkled, and bright green, with finely serrate edges. Spearmint produces its small pink, lavender, or white flowers in whorls or tings on slender spikes, 2.5–3 mm in length and in width, in the axils of the upper leaves. Flowers bloom in late June through August. Spearmint grows well in almost all temperate climates in part shade to full sun, usually found growing on roadsides and in waste places, usually in damp loamy soils with rich organic content and in a sunny position. Characteristic of many mint species, spearmint can quickly become invasive. As a precaution many gardeners grow it in containers or locations where spreading is not an issue. Spearmint will grow quickly by seed, however it is most often propagated via division in spring or autumn. Spearmint leaves should be harvested when it’s just coming into flower and can be dried for later use. The stalks should be cut a few inches above the root, on a dry day, after the dew has disappeared, and before the hot sun has taken any oil from the leaves. Store dried spearmint leaves and powdered spearmint in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Excessive use of spearmint tea may cause damage to the uterus. High amounts of spearmint tea may increase kidney damage and worsen kidney disorders.
