Historically and in literature, sulfur is also called “brimstone”, which means “burning stone”.  Elemental sulfur can be found near hot springs and volcanic regions in many parts of the world, especially along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Historically, Sicily was a major source of sulfur in the Industrial Revolution. Lakes of molten sulfur up to ~200 m in diameter have been found on the sea floor, associated with submarine volcanoes, at depths where the boiling point of water is higher than the melting point of sulfur. Significant deposits in salt domes occur along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, and in evaporites in eastern Europe and western Asia. On Earth, elemental sulfur occurs naturally in volcanic emissions, including emissions from hydrothermal vents. Pliny the Elder discusses sulfur in book 35 of his Natural History, saying that its best-known source is the island of Melos. In recent times, the main source of sulfur has become petroleum and natural gas. This is due to the requirement to remove sulfur from fuels in order to prevent acid rain, and has resulted in a surplus of sulfur. It is also found in garlic, onions, brussels sprouts, asparagus, kale, eggs, legumes, soy/black/kidney beans, meat, and broccoli. Sulfur is applied to the skin and is an ingredient in various products for dandruff, scabies, acne, rosacea, ringworm, psoriasis, eczema, and some take it orally for other conditions. Sulfur seems to have antibacterial effects against the bacteria that causes acne. It may help promote the loosening and shedding of skin, thus potentially helping to treat conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis. Shampoos containing 2% sulfur and 2% salicylic acid have been shown to successfully treat dandruff when used twice a week for five weeks. Studies show that ointments containing 8% and 10% sulfur for three consecutive days and nights worked effectively against scabies. Some people believe that taking sulfur supplements has various benefits, such as relief from allergies, osteoarthritis, and muscle soreness. Sulfur is a part of many bacterial defense molecules. Most β-lactam antibiotics, including the penicillins, cephalosporins and monobactams contain sulfur. In the late 18th century, furniture makers used molten sulfur to produce decorative inlays. Molten sulfur is sometimes still used for setting steel bolts into drilled concrete holes where high shock resistance is desired for floor-mounted equipment attachment points. Sulfur today is used to make sulfuric acid for a wide range of uses, particularly fertilizer. Elemental sulfur is one of the oldest fungicides and pesticides. “Dusting sulfur”, elemental sulfur in powdered form, is a common fungicide for grapes, strawberry, many vegetables and several other crops. It has a good efficacy against a wide range of powdery mildew diseases as well as black spot. It is the only fungicide used in organically farmed apple production. Sulfur is insoluble in water. *CAUTION!: Read the below contraindications and toxicities before handling. *Store unused product in the original container only in a cool, dry area out of reach of children and pets. Its natural deposits do often appear as if they could be the gates to hell. Sulfur is even mentioned in the Bible  (as “brimstone”), and is associated with divine retribution. One example is Revelation 21:8, “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death”. The Hebrew Bible both uses the phrase “fire and brimstone” in the context of divine punishment and purification. Historically, sulfur springs have been regarded as ebullitions from hell. Pliny says that in his time, sulfur was used to keep off evil spirits. Sulfur was often burned to drive off demons. Sulfur powder is used in witchcraft and voodoo to banish evil and negativity, to dispel or prevent a hex, to destroy an enemy’s power over you, to remove curses, and for psychic protection. It is used extensively in banishing and protective rituals. Simply placing a piece on the altar can act as a shield to protect your home. Sulfur powder is also often used for physical and spiritual transformation. Sulfur is believed to help remove negative thoughts and emotions, calm stubbornness, relieve anger, and allow one to be more flexible. An alternative to sulfur is garlic, which contains various sulfurous elements and has similar magical purposes.
