Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: To grow marigolds, sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, or start them indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. For a succession of blooms, you can plant marigolds throughout the summer. Marigolds prefer full sun to partial shade and fertile, loose, loamy soil with good drainage. They can also tolerate dry conditions. Sow seeds 1 inch apart and ½ inch deep. For shorter varieties, space plants 8 inches apart, and 10-12 inches apart for taller varieties. Water thoroughly after planting. To keep the soil moist and discourage weeds, you can add a 1-2 inch layer of mulch between plants. Tall marigolds may need staking to keep them upright, even in a sheltered site. Deadhead them to keep them blooming almost non-stop all summer.
