It may also refer to the healing applications of the plant, or it may refer to its strong odor. Although the scent of the fine, lacey foliage is pleasing to humans (the plant grows one of the sweetest scented flowers and was highly regarded in earlier times), the root of the plant smells unmistakably similar to sweaty gym shoes, an attribute that earned the nickname “phu” from the early Greek botanist, Dioscorides (like phew!). In North America and Europe, Valerian is a popular garden ornamental and hanging plant. Valerian Root acts as a mild sedative and hypnotic, and is most often used as tea, liquid extract or in capsule form shortly before retiring for the night for sleeplessness and insomnia. It helps produce a natural healing sleep. Valerian Root is one of the most relaxing nervines available in herbalism. It has been safely used to reduce tension, anxiety, and overexcitable states. As an antispasmodic, Valerian Root has a muscle relaxing effect on smooth and skeletal muscles, and will aid in the relief of cramping, neuralgias and intestinal colic. As a pain reliever it is most indicated where that pain is associated with tension, such as in migraines. Valerian Root is not believed to carry any risk of dependency and does not affect mental concentration. Historical Uses:  sleeplessness, insomnia, sedative, hypnotic, relaxation, nervousness, calm, depression, stress, tension, anxiety, excitability, nervousness, restlessness, neuroticism, muscle relaxation, muscle cramps, muscle spasms, restless leg syndrome, neuralgia, tension headache, migraine, trembling disorders, irritability, manic behavior, mood swings, moodiness, panic attack, PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder Mystical Attributes:  It was believed that this plant had the properties of turning anything bad into good, turning bad situations around to one’s advantage, and finding the positive in seemingly negative situations. Valerian root is useful in spells related to ending guilt, self-condemnation, and negative self-talk, and for developing self-acceptance. Hang Valerian leaves around the home to promote harmony among loved ones. It is added to the chalice as an herb of peace. Valerian is said to be one of the herbs used by King Solomon when cleansing his temple. It is also useful in animal magic, especially cat magic and evoking animal spirits. Cats cannot resist Valerian Root, and seem to become intoxicated in its presence much like they do when catnip is nearby. The Pied Piper of Hamlin Town carried Valerian Root in his pockets to entice the rats out of town. For evoking animal spirits without using animal ingredients, combine Valerian Root 2:1 with White Sandalwood. If you’re a woman, pin a sprig of Valerian to your shirt to attract men. Sprinkle Valerian Root at the front door to deter unwanted visitors. Hang it in the home to protect against natural disasters like lightning or fire. Combine Valerian with other herbs and crystals in sachets or amulets in a dream-pillow to ward off nightmares. For eliminating troubles, write the trouble on paper, then burn the paper and mix the ashes with powdered Valerian Root and bury it. For use as a magickal torch, soak the dried stalks of the Valerian plant in tallow or oil. In HooDoo, powdered Valerian Root can be used as a substitute for graveyard dirt. It enhances any curse or hex. Used alone as a hex, it can be cast upon your enemy’s pathway or steps, or placed in a red bag and buried on your enemy’s property to bring evil upon them. Mystical Intentions:  anger, rage, conflict, calm, harmony, healing a broken heart, making up after a fight, sensitivity, forgiveness, guilt, self-esteem, positivity, purification, consecration, cleansing, communication, mindfulness, emotional stability, peace, happiness, tranquility, grief, loss of a loved one, sleeping spells, animal magick, finding a familiar, attraction, home protection, unwanted guests, boundaries, protection from nightmares, cursing, hexing, home protection, protection from lightning, protection from fire, comfort, compassion, contentment, despair, discord Taste & Smell:  The smell of Valerian flowers and foliage is exceptionally pleasing and sweet. However, the root is likened to the smell of sweaty gym shoes. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Valerian officinalis is native to Europe and parts of Asia and has been naturalized in North America. It is an herbaceous perennial of the Valerianaceae family. The plant typically reaches heights of 3-5 feet, and sometimes as high as 6 feet, though less frequently. Valerian’s distinctive attributes include a clump of deeply lobed basal foliage from which rise tall, slender, sparsely-leaved stems. In the summer months of June and July these stems are topped by highly fragrant blossoms. These salverform flowers, present in white to pale pink and are in branched panicles (cymes to 2-4″ wide). Leaves are odd-pinnate, with each leaf having 7-10 pairs of toothed, lance-shaped leaflets. The entire plant is redolent: leaves are aromatic when bruised; and roots also have a strong scent. Both Valerian Root and Valerian Leaves attract cats, similar to catnip. Valerian typically grows in damp locations, but also can be found in drier areas. It often is established along roads or in fields in full to part sun. The Valerian plant grows in average, medium to wet, well-drained soils. The plant prefers rich loams. To promote bigger roots (the part that is usually harvested), pick off flower heads. Propagate Valerian officianlis by seed or division in the spring. The plant spreads easily via rhizomes and often freely self-seeds. As the plant can be invasive, deadhead spent flowers to prevent self-seeding. To grow from seed, barely cover them (light helps in germination but NOT direct sunlight). They should germinate in 1-4 weeks at room temperature (65F/18C). Germination rate is usually low with this plant, around 30%. Some people do a one-week soak in cold water that is changed for fresh daily. Others do a cold stratification to increase germination. Sow in the spring or on Winter Solstice. Set transplants in sun or part shade 18-36″/45-90cm apart. The short thick greyish Valerian roots lay for the most part above ground, shooting forth on all sides. Many green leaves spring up from the heads of these roots, which at first are somewhat broad and long, without any division at all in them, or dented on the edges. Those that rise up after are more and more divided on each side, some to the middle rib, made of many leaves together on a stalk, and those upon the stalk in like manner more divided, but smaller towards the top than below. The roots are harvested in the fall of their second year and cut to thoroughly dry, and may also be ground into a powder. Store dried Valerian Root pieces and powdered Valerian Root in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Large amounts and/or excessive use may cause headaches, giddiness, and agitation. Some individuals will react paradoxically to Valerian and will actually be stimulated by it. Valerian interacts with barbiturates. Valerian is high in arginine, therefore avoid in Herpes simplex virus. Use caution with sedative and anti-depressant medications as it may theoretically potentiate effects.   Constituents:  Volatile oils (camphene, borneol) Sesquiterpene alkaloids (Valerenic acid) Iridoid esters (valepotriates) Alkaloids (actinidine, valerene, valerianine, chatinine)     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
