Antique 9ct Gold Australian Post Federation c1901 Brooch

A charming antique brooch from the Australian Federation era, c1901! The brooch is made of 9ct gold. A subdued yellow gilding coats the rose gold beneath, which embraces a subtle time-worn, but lovely two-tone antiquity look. The brooch is steeped with oodles of Australian history; Patriotic jewellery was made to commemorate the Federation of Australia (also known as the Commonwealth of Australia) that was formed on January the 1st, year 1901. Many stick pins, brooches and pendants were made to commemorate this special event. The brooch features symbolic Australian motifs, and the design is reminiscent to the Australian coat of arms. A kangaroo and emu sit atop of a boomerang. The miniature, full bodied kangaroo and emu come to life with a gold texture which creates the appearance of shaggy feathers and fur to the bodies. A heart-shaped pink garnet top doublet shines from the centre of the boomerang, it is set in a six-prong setting. There is an elongated and engraved scroll motif, as well as a single star profile placed behind and atop to the pink gem. A little white seed pearl rests in the star. To the back of the piece is a secure metal pin and 'C' connection. There is also early Australian guarantee stamps to the reverse; '9' 'Sheaf' and another stamp likely to be the makers mark, albeit difficult to decipher. A wonderful brooch for the avid Australian antique jewellery collector. A perfect Aussie token for the traveler or a gift for the homesick working abroad!
