This particular variety comes from the bitter orange tree which is known for its higher therapeutic qualities. The bitter orange was bred by crossing mandarin oranges (Citrus reticulate) and grapefruit (Citrus maxima). Neroli Essential Oil is known for its delicate, sweet, floral citrus aroma. It is commonly referred to as an exotic and exquisite essential oil. It is estimated that around one thousand pounds of handpicked orange blossom flowers are needed to produce a bottle of pure neroli oil, which explains why it is so closely associated with luxury and comfort. Although various types of orange essential oils have been around for hundreds of years, Neroli Essential Oil wasn’t discovered until the seventeenth century. It was named after the princess Anne Maria de la Tremoille of Nerola Sicily, who loved the scent so much she bathed in it and even had the leather of her gloves perfumed with it. In the early years, Neroli was highly valued for it’s ability to be used against the plague and fevers. This oil is non-toxic and non-sensitizing. Neroli essential oil has antiseptic, antibacterial and fungicidal properties. It is often used in skin care, especially for cellulitis. It is also used for skin lightening, and can help reduce the appearance of age spots. Its astringent properties can help increase the elasticity of skin, making it look and feel brighter and more youthful. For this reason, it is often used to smooth the appearance of wrinkles and stretch marks. Topical application of neroli oil allows its natural anti-inflammatory properties to ease swollen skin, while some studies have suggested that it can even regenerate skin cells. Neroli oil can also benefit the skin by removing harmful bacteria and other forms of skin irritation. People who struggle with swollen muscles, joints, and tissues may find that neroli oil can help to reduce any associated inflammation and pain. According to a study published in 2015, neroli essential oil can work as a pain management agent, reducing central and peripheral sensitivity to pain, making it harder for the body to register pain. In another study involving women in the first stage of labor, researchers found that neroli oil was able to limit their experience of pain, whilst also lowering feelings of anxiety. In a 2012 study, researchers found that when neroli was used as part of an aromatic blend it was able to reduce both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. In aromatherapy, neroli oil reduces feelings of nervousness and negativity. It uplifts the mood, is harmonizing, and helps promote sleep. When diffused and inhaled, neroli essential oil can help reduce stress and anxiety. Research has found that it can help balance serum cortisol levels, lower stress in menopausal women, ease symptoms of PMS, and increase libido. The tree can reach a height of up to 26 feet (8 meters). Its white, five-petalled flowers give off an intense fragrance. Unusually, not all flowers have the female pistil (consisting of ovary, style and stigma) as well as the male stamens: some flowers have only male stamens. The fruit of the bitter orange is very similar to the sweet orange, but is smaller with a diameter of only 2.75-3(7-8 cm). The sphere is slightly flattened and the skin is thicker and more dimpled than that of the sweet orange. The fruit flesh tastes sour, while the peel and the skin surrounding the fruit segments have a strong bitter taste. Around the Mediterranean the ripe bitter oranges are harvested in January and February. After planting, it can take at least five years before the first flowers can be harvested, and another five years for the tree to reach full production. Neroli flowers are usually hand-picked between late April and early May. The flowers are delicate, so even the slightest bruising can cause them to release their oil. Neroli oil is extracted from the flowers using steam distillation. It can take about a thousand pounds of flowers to produce one bottle of pure oil.
