The Saw Palmetto is a North American palm tree that’s been used by Native Americans for thousands of years. At one time it was a staple of the Native American diet providing nutritious berries. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Saw Palmetto is a shrubby, dwarf species of palm tree in the Arecaceae family that is primarily distributed throughout sandy, coastal regions of the southeastern United States, most commonly along the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal plains, but also as far inland as southern Arkansas. Although it is extremely hardy and slow-growing, it also has the distinction of being the most common and smallest palm tree in the U.S. The plant typically grows 5-10 feet tall and spreads 4-10 feet wide. Some specimens in Florida are over 500 years old. The plant’s leaves have a bare petiole that terminates in about 20 leaflets arranged as a rounded fan. Sharp, fine teeth or spines protect the petiole, which lend the plant its common name. These protrusions can easily break the skin, and protection should be worn as a precaution when working around a Saw Palmetto. Inland, Saw Palmetto’s leaves are light green, though in coastal regions they appear silvery-white. They are 1–2 meters (39 – 79 inches) in length, with each of the leaflets being 50–100 cm (20-40 inches) long.  The stout stems usually crawl across the ground and produce fan-shaped fronds. The flowers of the Saw Palmetto are yellowish-white and about 5 mm across. They form in dense loose branching clusters of flowers reaching up to 60 cm (24 inches) long. The plant’s reddish-black fruit is a large drupe. Saw Palmetto can be found growing in clumps or dense thickets in warm, sunny, sandy coastal lands or in pine woods as undergrowth. Saw Palmetto prefers a moist but well-drained soil. The Saw Palmetto seed is best sown as soon as it is ripe in a warm greenhouse. It usually germinates freely. Stored seed is more difficult to germinate. The stored seed should be pre-soaked for 24 hours in warm water before sowing in a warm greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first two winters. Plant them out into their permanent locations in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Saw Palmetto berries are picked when they ripen in the fall and may be dried for later use. When ripe, the fruits are bluish to black, comparable to black olives in size and shape. Store dried Saw Palmetto berries, cut pieces of Saw Palmetto berries, and powdered Saw Palmetto berries in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. May cause stomach upset (rare). Ensure continually monitoring of PSA levels and prostate size even if symptoms of BPH are improving with use.
