The flowers are valued much by the aesthetic world for their beauty and fragrance. The flowers are attractive, elegant, and sweet. It has long been cherished for the aromatic oils extracted from its fragrant white flowers. It is often used as a heart (middle) note in high grade perfumes, especially oriental floral accords. When introduced to Europe, it became part of the moon garden, a collection of white or pastel night-blooming flowers that release an intense fragrance after dusk. The aroma of tuberose oil is believed to have calming and relaxing effects. It can help to reduce stress and promote feelings of well-being. In ancient times, tuberose was used as a perfumed decoration for terraces, verandas, window sills, and balconies. Due to its sweet and sensual scent, tuberose essential oil has long been considered an effective aphrodisiac. Tuberose essential oil can help heal damaged hair and split ends. It can also help reduce hair fallout and dandruff. Tuberose has antioxidant properties that can help with skin health, including slowing the signs of aging, soothing breakouts, preventing inflammatory skin conditions, helping acne, and soothing dry cracked heels. Dried tuberose bulbs in powdered form have historically been used as a remedy for gonorrhea. Tuberose blends well with jasmine and ylang ylang. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Tuberose is a tropical ornamental bulbous flowering plant native to Mexico, cultivated for the production of long-lasting flower spikes. It is a night-blooming moon garden flower that is commercially grown in several countries including India, Kenya, Mexico, Morocco, France, Italy, the United States (Hawaii and North Carolina), South Africa, Taiwan, China, and many other tropical and subtropical areas in the world. Plant tuberose bulbs in the spring after the last frost and when daytime temperatures remain above 70°F. Tuberose typically blooms from mid to late summer, or around 90 to 120 days after planting. It grows best in full sun and well-draining soil. You can improve soil quality with compost or other organic amendments. Plant bulbs 2-4 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart. Keep soil moist, especially during the late summer blooming period. Water about once a week if there isn’t regular rain. Weekly deep waterings are better than lighter waterings every day or two. Apply a complete plant food once growth appears. Avoid fertilizers with high nitrogen content, which can promote excess growth. Snipping stems when in bloom will not hurt the plants, but will actually promote the production of new flower spikes. Dig up the bulbs around May and June, and divide every 2-3 years. Do not cut the foliage off at the end of the season, let it yellow so the plant can still receive nutrients. Remove the dry foliage when the leaves turn yellow and die back. If you’re gardening in zone 8 or colder, save your tuberose for next year by carefully digging up the bulbs after the first frost. Allow the bulbs to air dry for several days before storing them in a cool, dry location. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. May cause allergic sensitivity or reactions. Discontinue use or if you experience an adverse reaction. The strong fragrance of tuberose can irritate infants, young children, and pets.
