As one of the 50 Fundamental Herbs, it is one of the most revered botanicals in traditional Chinese medicine. Astragalus is known in China as “Huang-Qi”, which means “yellow leader.”  The herb helps to produce a chemical called interferon in the body, which works to interfere with the life cycle of a virus and kill it before it takes over. So Astragalus is especially known for helping to boost immunity and fight viruses.  It can help boost the production of white blood cells, which are most responsible for fighting infection. In the east, astragalus is referred to as an adaptogen. This means that it helps the body to adapt to resist the effects of stress and recover from disease. Astragalus can be combined with ginseng.  The two work together to help with problems such as fatigue, lack of appetite, and problems with excessive perspiration (hyperhydrosis). The powdered root tastes slightly sweet. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Astragalus is native to the northern and eastern parts of China as well as Mongolia and Korea. Astragalus is a flowering herbaceous perennial of the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) or Legume family that grows 16-36 inches tall. It has hairy stems with leaves made up of 12-18 pairs of leaflets. Small, light-yellow pea-like flowers arise from leaf axils. Astragalus prefers a sunny location, but is also found along forest margins, in shrub thickets, in open woods, as well as in grasslands near the edge of forests.  It appears to be quite hardy and adaptable.  It thrives in a deep, sandy, well-drained, somewhat alkaline soil.  The seeds have a hard seed coat.  If the small kidney-shaped seeds are nicked with a file, or rubbed between sandpaper, then soaked in water overnight, they germinate easily, usually within a week. The roots are collected after growing for four to seven years, harvested in the spring and then dried.  Root can be dried as diagonal slices or as a powder. Store dried forms in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: May decrease blood glucose, blood pressure & heart rate, increase growth hormone, diuresis, and cause stomach upset due to saponins. Use caution in acute infections, autoimmune disease, hypotension, hypoglycemia, bradycardia, electrolyte/water imbalances, growth hormone and inflammatory skin disorders. Avoid in pregnancy & lactation, spleen transplant (may cause graft rejection and immune stimulation), and cancers of the blood. May theoretically reduce absorption of many agents if taken simultaneously. Can reduce the side effects & toxicity of some drugs as it is a hepatoprotective. Anticoagulants due to antiplatelet activity (theoretical). May counteract anti-diabetic agents, and potentiate effects of diuretics, anti-hypertensives & dopaminergics. May inhibit effects of immunosuppressants (eg. Cyclosporine & corticosteroids), and potentiate the effects of recombinant interleukin-2, interferon-1 and interferon-2 therapy.
