A spectacular antique double heart ring from the early Edwardian era, c1904! The eye-catching ring is made of 18ct yellow gold and features two hearts entwined together and a bow motif above. Each heart is comprised of one garnet top doublet and one replacement glass-filled ruby. Framing the gems are blue garnet top doublets imitating sapphires. The bow motif above consists of blue garnet top doublets and one natural purplish red garnet set centrally. The double heart motif was popular in the romantic Victorian era through to the early Edwardian era. It often symbolised two hearts that are bound together by love, passion and hope for the future, it was also known as a 'love token'. The garnet top doublet gems were popular in the mid 19th century through to the early 20th century. Essentially they are composite stones with a natural garnet used as the top crown component and a coloured glass bottom pavilion - the glass colour resembling the gemstone which was typically sapphire, ruby or emerald. This type of composite gem is no longer produced, therefore the replacement glass-filled ruby was the best colour match available today. The gemstones are individually claw and bead set which add a beautiful sparkle, there is a lovely coronet style undercarriage to one side of the ring. A sturdy 2.90mm wide rounded profile shank makes up the rest of ring. A set of crisp English hallmarks are visible inside the shank -representing 18ct gold, Chester origin and dated 1904.
