The acid in the resin is the active ingredient believed to act as an anti-inflammatory agent. One study found that 14 out of 20 people with Crohn’s disease who received Boswellia achieved remission. Boswellia is also sometimes used to treat asthma and depression. The dried resin “tears” are burned over charcoal like incense. Boswellia serrata is used to scent soaps, lotions and other cosmetics. Boswellia serrata is used in the perfumery and cosmetics industry. It is also used in over-the-counter anti-inflammatory gels. Outside of Ayurveda, this herb is not used internally.
