The resin and essential oil is used as incense to help quiet the mind and calm nervousness. The oil is often used in aromatherapy to relieve stress and congestion. It has also shown significant antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. A drop or two of Cistus oil into daily moisturizer can help keep skin looking young and healthy. Mixed with a carrier oil, it can be massaged into the skin to help areas affected by psoriasis, eczema, itchiness, or other disorders. It can help wounds heal more quickly, and also tighten skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The resin is known for its astringent, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. In ancient times, the resin was used as an expectorant and antibiotic. It flowers in the spring then leaves fall off. Generally around the hottest days of midsummer, the leaves re-grow and a sticky brown fatty resinous substance called labdanum can be found on the leaves. The labdanum is gently gathered, dried, and made into a gum. Cistus grows in the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East. It is an extremely aggressive plant which has taken over much of former farmland and grasslands in the mountain regions of central Spain and much of southern Portugal. The shrub grows from about 3 feet to 8 feet tall and wide. The leaves are evergreen, lanceolate, 3-10 cm long and 1-2 cm wide, dark green above and paler underneath. The flowers are 5-8 cm diameter, with 5 papery white, yellow, or pink petals, usually with a red to maroon spot at the center, surrounding the yellow stamens and pistils. The flowers are short-lived. The whole plant is covered with the sticky exudate of fragrant resin (the source of labdanum) which is used in herbal medicine and perfumery. Cistus Ladanifer should be planted in full sun in a well-drained soil, irrigated infrequently to not at all. It grows well in poor soil. It is hardy to about 20°F. It is a good tough drought-tolerant plant for a dry garden or a seaside garden. Cistus is resistant to deer. After about ten years, the plant will become very woody and will produce less and less flowers.
