Dreaming is enhanced by using the essential oil as incense before sleep. Clary Sage can also be used to treat sexual dysfunction, impotency, and frigidity by its aphrodisiac properties.  It can be made into a massage oil. Clary Sage contains a chemical known as sclerol, an estrogen-like structure with hormone-balancing effects.  It can help with menstrual pain and perimenopause symptoms.  It has a stimulating effect on the uterus and should be avoided by pregnant women until the end of the third trimester. For pain relief, Clary Sage can be added to a hot bath to relax and soothe tension and pain. Clary Sage is a euphoric herb but can be sedating, so don’t use it when you have to drive or operate machinery. It tends to provoke an active rather than a stupefying drunkenness. It is best not to combine it with alcohol, as it can cause extreme drunkenness and a very bad headache later. Barely cover seeds to germinate in two weeks in room temperature. Plant out in full sun after all danger of frost is over. It forms a rosette the first year and the second shoots up stalks of mint-like flowers that can be pink, lavender, or blue and that are 24-36″/ 61-91cm tall. This plant is biennial but usually lives longer than two years. It’s hardy down to -20F/-28C (zones 5-9). Like all mints, it can be aggressive. It is a good idea to plant members of the mint family in areas where their lively reproductive capabilities will not be a problem, such as areas bordered by pavement or grass, where unwanted plants can just be mowed down. Harvest the flowering tops in the early morning for highest essential oil content. Some believe it is best to harvest clary sage during the Balsamic phase of the Moon. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Clary Sage can induce labor! Can cause uterine contractions that may be dangerous! Do not use around small children. Do not use if taking prescription drugs or scheduled for major surgery. Do not use if experiencing low blood pressure. Avoid use during or after consuming alcohol. Do not use if experiencing estrogen-dependent diseases or with low estrogen. May increase the effects of chloral hydrate and hexobarbitone. Do not allow contact with eyes, nostrils, or mouth.
