Recent clinical trials show that Corydalis can be used for acute, chronic and neurological pain that is difficult to ease. A strong analgesic (pain reliever, with 10-40% the analgesic potency of morphine), it has been used as a Chinese remedy since at least the 8th century to invigorate the blood and relieve almost any painful condition. In Mexico, Corydalis root tea is given to women who have just given birth. The constituent imparts a sedative and analgesic action (about 1-10% that of opium), with studies showing it is a dopamine receptor antagonist and is non-addictive, but tolerance can still be developed. Corydalis has also been used to help people during opiate withdrawal. It is also native of lakeshore headlands and cliffs in New Hampshire and Vermont, and in rocky woodlands in Massachusetts. It makes a beautiful and delicate ground cover under shade trees or planted among rocks in edging and walkways. The plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, and is also deer resistant. The clustered tubular flowers bloom from early spring to autumn in yellow, gold, blue, purple, red, pink, or white. The foliage is many shades of green, grey-green, and fern-like. When planting outside, first keep the seed at a temperature of 62°F (17°C) for 8 weeks, then chill in the fridge for an additional 2 weeks. Surface sow seed, spacing 4 to 16 inches apart when the temperature is around 64°F (18°C). Alternatively, you can plant Corydalis bulbs at a depth of 7 cm at the beginning of summer. Seeds or bulbs should be planted into a lightly shaded area of the garden with good drainage. To grow indoors, the plant is easiest to grow from tubers. The germination time for seeds is one month to a year. Stratify in the fridge for two or three weeks, then surface sow seeds and keep at 60°F (10°C) in the light until they germinate. Sow seedlings outdoors after the last frost. Corydalis prefers partial shade, rich moist soil (pH 6 to 8), good drainage, and regular watering. The plant may die back to the ground and go dormant when summer temperatures get hot. However, if placed in a cool microclimate with regular water, it may keep going well into the summer or even into autumn. Cut back the plants after flowering as they are able to self seed. It can become invasive if not kept in check. Propagate by division of tubers, rhizomes and bulbs once flowering has finished.
