The oil of the flowers is sweeter than that of the whole plant. This lavender blooms most heavily in the spring, and unlike others of its kind, its flowers stay on the stem and remain blue when dried. Lavender is skin toning and helps ease redness and dryness caused by stress-related eczema. It helps with inflammatory conditions, nervous psoriasis, skin infections, wounds, cuts, grazes, rashes, itching, and sunburn. Lavender is a nervine, good for nervous headaches and nausea. A study has actually found that lavender aromatherapy can help calm dementia patients and suppress aggression, agitation, and other psychotic symptoms. Lavender can relieve nervous tension and may help stuttering. In Tuscany, pinning a sprig of lavender to your shirt is a traditional ward against the evil eye. Lavender may be used as an asperging herb (to sprinkle water for purification purposes) and dried lavender sticks or wands can be burnt like incense. Lavender is especially helpful for work involving raising spirits. A double infusion (add flowers, let sit, remove the spent flowers, and add another helping of flowers) will result in a strongly fragrant liquid excellent for help in spirit work. An infusion of the flowers can also be added to the bath for this purpose. Thanks to its gentle scent, it is an ideal herb to use in conjunction with magic for children. It is also useful in spells to sharpen the mind, to encourage or strengthen pure love and to encourage fertility. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Lavender flourishes in zones 5-8 (temperate climates). It blooms most heavily in the spring but will flower until frost. To grow Lavender, cold stratify the seeds by sowing in a paper towel that has been wet and wrung out. Fold and make good contact between the paper towel and the seeds, put in a baggie, and refrigerate for one month. Take the seeds out and leave at room temperature for 3-4 weeks, then plant for germination. This plant typically has low germination, so over-plant. Lavender can grow indoors, although it does not flower as well or get very tall. Lavender handles mild cold, but it dislikes humidity, especially the sort found in the Southeastern United States. So where humidity is high, mulch with pea gravel, grit, or white sand. Where nematodes are a problem in the soil, grow it in pots. It can grow up to 2 x 3 feet outside. For drying flowers, harvest flower heads in the morning when the top flowers are just opening. It takes 7-14 days to dry.
