Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Mandarin trees thrive in subtropical and warm frost-free zones, needing 8-12 hours of sunlight a day. However, they are adaptable to cooler climates if there is protection from heavy frosts. Satsuma mandarins are the most cold-tolerant. If growing indoors, place the tree near a south or southwest-facing window or glass door, or use a plant light for 8-10 hours a day. Mandarin trees grow best in temperatures between 55-85°F, with an average of 65°F. They can be planted at any time of year, but spring or autumn when temperatures are mild and the soil is warm is ideal. The trees should be planted 15 feet apart and 15 feet away from the house or other large trees. They are self-fruitful and do not require cross-pollination. Mandarin trees prefer well-drained, light garden grade soil mix. When planting, you can mix in compost and aged manure in a hole. If growing in a container, use a container with proper drainage holes and add pebbles to improve air and water flow. Water mandarin trees regularly, once or twice a week in drier climates. If you’re growing in a container, water until water runs through the drainage holes. Mandarin trees can tolerate drought, but too much water can cause problems. Fertilize the tree with a citrus fertilizer in early spring, summer, or fall. You can spread a balanced organic fertilizer over the root zone. The size of the mandarin tree can be managed by pruning. Otherwise, only prune the tree to remove dead or diseased branches. Keep the area around the tree free of weeds and grass, and at least 3 feet away from the trunk. After planting, mulch around the base of the tree with organic mulch, like sugarcane or pine bark, but keep it at least 10 cm away from the trunk. It takes 2-4 years for trees with grafted rootstocks from nurseries to bear fruit, or 4-7 years if grown from seed. The fruit is orange in color, with a thin peel which is often loose or easily removed. Mandarins are smaller and less round, sweeter, less acidic, and have a stronger flavor than the typical orange. The average lifespan of the tree is approximately 50 years. Contraindications & Toxicity: Mandarin oil is photosensitizing. Avoid sun exposure with use. May cause an allergic skin reaction.
