The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the bark. The aroma is calming and sedating, used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation, help relieve stress, and improve sleep. It may also help with mild anxiety and depression. The essential oil is commonly used in cosmetics and perfumery. Some describe it like a cross between sandalwood and coconut ice cream. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Massoia is an evergreen tree native to Papua, Java, and the Moluccan Islands. It can grow in temperatures ranging from 16-34°C (60-93°F). Massoia only requires rare shading. It should be planted during the rainy season or when the soil has adequate water content. Plant at least 40 cm (about 16 inches) apart, but adjust the distance based on the forest stand density. To grow from seed, choose seeds that are dark in color and taken directly from the tree (not collected from the forest floor). Rinse the seeds, then peel off and discard the fruit flesh from them. Soak in water at room temperature for 24 hours, then soak in a Dithane solution for 2 hours to kill fungus. Sow the seeds in a greenhouse in a mixture of soil, charcoal, and cocopeat with 50% shade. Once the seedlings have ore than two strands of leaves, transplant them to polybags containing soil, sand, and charcoal husks. Use seedlings that are at least six months old and over 45 cm (about 18 inches) tall for planting. Contraindications & Toxicity: May cause contact dermatitis, often with serious complication, such as skin inflammation and shortness of breath. Do not use if allergic. Contains high concentrations of lactones that can be particularly irritating with light skinned people, and thus must be highly diluted. Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
