Description:  Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is an igneous rock. Obsidian is produced from felsic lava, rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silica, granting them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. Together with rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass forming from the lava. Obsidian is mineral-like, but not a true mineral because, as a glass, it is not crystalline. Obsidian is hard, brittle, and amorphous; it therefore fractures with sharp edges. The first known archaeological evidence of usage was in Kenya around 700,000 BC. By the late Neolithic, sophisticated bladelets were made from Obsidian, which were used in ritual circumcisions and cutting of umbilical cords of newborns. In the past, it has been used to manufacture cutting and piercing tools, and it has been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades. Obsidian was valued in Stone Age cultures who fractured it to produce sharp blades and arrowheads. It was also polished to create early mirrors. Today, Obsidian is used to make very sharp glass knives, which can have a cutting edge many times sharper than high-quality steel surgical scalpels. Due to its precision, it is used today in eye surgeries, plastic surgery, and dermatologic surgery. The major disadvantage of Obsidian blades is their brittleness compared to those made of metal. Obsidian is also used for ornamental purposes and as a gemstone. Plinths for audio turntables have also been made of Obsidian since the 1970s. Obsidian is found near volcanoes in locations which have undergone rhyolitic eruptions. It can be found in Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Australia, Canada, Chile, Georgia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua new Guinea, Peru, Russia, Scotland, The Canary Islands, Turkey and the United States. There are only four major deposit areas in the central Mediterranean: Lipari, Pantelleria, Palmarola and Monte Arci (Sardinia). Ancient sources in the Aegean were Milos and Gyali. Acigöl town and the Göllü Dağ volcano were the most important sources in central Anatolia, one of the more important source areas in the prehistoric Near East. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Obsidian when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a black candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours. Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and cleaning products. Because your gemstones can absorb negative energy, avoid allowing others to touch or handle them and be sure to cleanse regularly.
