It is thought to promote healthy hair by eliminating dead skin cells when applied to the scalp. Palmarosa oil is moisturizing and hydrating to skin, and can balance both oily and dry skin types. Its antibacterial and antiseptic properties can help eliminate germs that cause acne, blemishes, and other skin infections. Palmarosa oil is anti-inflammatory and relieves redness, swelling, and dark circles under eyes. And the antioxidants contained in the oil can reduce free radicals, DNA damage, and cell damage that leads to wrinkles. In aromatherapy, palmarosa oil is considered a mood booster. Used in body and massage oils, it relaxes muscles and reduces fatigue. It is relaxing and soothing when added to a warm bath. Throughout history, palmarosa oil has been used in Ayurvedic medicine to help alleviate skin concerns and nerve pain. According to research, palmarosa oil was found to prove 100% protection against mosquitos for 12 hours. It can grow in a variety of soils, but well-drained loamy soil with a pH of 6–7 is ideal. It can also survive in alkaline soils with a pH of up to 9, but growth and oil yield may decrease if the pH rises above 8.5. Poor drainage after heavy irrigation can also be an issue, as standing water in the summer can harm the grass. For best results, you can grow palmarosa in a nursery with lots of irrigation. You can prepare nursery beds in May by adding compost, organic matter, or FYM, and digging channels around the beds for irrigation. Sow seeds in lines that are 15–20 cm apart, and mix them with fine soil to help with even distribution. You can also try sowing seeds in raised beds to prevent them from being washed away by irrigation. Don’t sow the seeds too densely, as overcrowding can occur. You can transplant seedlings that are 15 cm tall and healthy, spacing them 60 cm apart. Some recommend planting slips in June–July or during the rainy season, but others say that rooted slips don’t establish as well as nursery transplants. If you transplant in May or June, you can harvest the grass for the first time about six months later. Harvesting involves cutting the upper third of the stem and the leaves.
