It wasn’t until the middle of the 18th century that peppermint was cultivated for its medicinal properties in Western Europe and England. Indigestion, cold and flu sufferers can find some relief by drinking peppermint tea. However, peppermint tea can cause insomnia and it is therefore best avoided at night. Peppermint will inhibit mucous secretion temporarily because of its menthol component, thus helping relieve stuffy nose. An infusion of the leaves will help ease most headaches (even migraines), stimulate the appetite, and aid digestion. Chewing a few peppermint leaves is thought to relieve a toothache. It is one of the best carminatives available, having a relaxing effect on visceral muscles and relieving intestinal colic and flatulence. Peppermint can help with feelings of nausea during travel or pregnancy. By 1920, 90 percent of the true peppermint and spearmint oils of the world were being produced in southwestern Michigan. Oil of peppermint contains menthol which is an antiseptic and anesthetic. In oil form, it can relieve sore and fatigued muscles when applied topically. Peppermint essential oil is used topically for rheumatism, sprains & strains. Burn Peppermint before bed for prophetic dreams. Peppermint tea aids in divination. Sometimes peppermint will be placed under a pillow to induce a vision of the future in dreams and to protect against attacks of evil magic, nightmares, and evil spirits of the night. Mint is placed in the home as a protective herb from illness. It has long been used in healing potions and mixtures. The fresh leaves rubbed against the head are said to relieve headaches. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Peppermint is a hybrid mint of the Lamiaceae family, a cross between watermint and spearmint. The peppermint plant is an herbaceous rhizomatous perennial that grows up to 30–90 cm (12–35 in) tall. It has smooth stems that are square in cross section. The rhizomes are wide-spreading, fleshy, and bare fibrous roots. The leaves are from 4–9 cm (1.6–3.5 in) long and 1.5–4 cm (0.59–1.6 in) broad, dark green with reddish veins, and with an acute apex and coarsely toothed margins. The leaves and stems are usually slightly fuzzy. The flowers are purple, 6–8 mm (0.24–0.31 in) long, with a four-lobed corolla about 5 mm (0.20 in) diameter; they are produced in whorls around the stem, forming thick, blunt spikes. Flowering is from mid to late summer. The peppermint plant is fast growing once it sprouts, it spreads very quickly. Peppermint generally grows best in moist, sun to part shade locations. The peppermint plant prefers moist, but not waterlogged soil. Peppermint reproduces rapidly and easily via division of the underground stolons. It can be invasive, so choose the garden location carefully. The leaves and flowering tops are harvested as soon as the flowers begin to open and can be dried. Dried peppermint should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Contraindications & Toxicity: High dose essential oil can cause burning and irritation.
