It has been used for centuries for religious, beauty, and health purposes. People have used red spikenard for colds, chronic coughs, asthma, and arthritis. It is also used to loosen chest congestion, boost tissue regrowth, and promote sweating. Some apply red spikenard to the skin to help skin diseases. Spikenard essential oil has both anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties. In the wild, it grows in shady woodlands and thickets. Spikenard needs a part sun / part shade location with protection from winds. Plant seeds in moist, well-draining soil. Spring planting should wait until all chance of frost is past. In cool climates, seeds can be started indoors. Transplant young seedlings to their permanent location in spring, after the threat of frost has passed. Do not wait for the plants to establish before transplanting them, as it is difficult to move them once they mature. The growth season for Spikenard is from May to late October.
