The pine tree represents rebirth and immortality and strength in adversity, overcoming hardships through optimism and inner strength. Pinecones represent masculinity and fertility and may be used to tip wands and staves. A pine branch hung over the door will invite joyful energy inside. Use a pine branch like a broom to brush away negative energy from your home or from surfaces (like your altar) and objects. Burn pine needles and pinecones to protect your hearth. Pine incense is made of pine resin and is traditionally burned in the winter to clear negative energy and lift the spirit. It is stimulating and encourages optimism. Pine incense can be burned during reversal spells designed to turn a negative spell into a positive one. Pine can be burned for general healing, (physical, emotional, mental and spiritual,) for grounding and general strength. Pine resin can be used as a substitute for copal or combined with it for a powerful purifying incense. Combined with camphor, it can be used to aid exorcism operations. The book Thrice-Greatest Hermes mentions pine resin as an incense useful for creating a healthful atmosphere. It also mentions burning pine and other fragrant woods such as cypress and juniper in sickrooms to help cure the plague. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: To collect seeds, turn pinecones upside down and shake them. Put the seeds in water then dry them. Store in an airtight container until planting season, which is usually in December to January. Start seeds indoors by filling a small pot with well-drained potting soil and placing a seed just below the surface, with the pointed end facing down. Put the pot in a sunny window and water it thoroughly. Keep the seeds moist, but don’t expect to see any changes until March or April, when germination should occur. Pine trees can also be grown from 4-6 inch cuttings from current year’s growth, preferably with new growth at the tips. When the seedlings are 6-12 inches tall, transplant them to 1-gallon pots and move them outside. Pine trees need a lot of sunlight and moist, well-drained soil that’s moderately fertile and slightly acidic, with a pH between 4 and 7. To test drainage, dig a hole that’s about a foot deep and fill it with water. Water newly planted trees every couple of days for the first month, then reduce watering to once a week or more often during droughts. Starting in the second year, fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at a rate of 1-2 kg per 9 square meters of soil. Healthy pine trees do not need pruning, but you can lightly trim them in late winter to control their size. To remove a dead or diseased branch, prune it back to the branch collar, and wait for dry conditions to prevent the spread of disease. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
