Many commercial lotions and creams actually include calendula extracts to help soothe the skin, and keep it soft and smooth.  Calendula is very effective with chapped skin or skin that’s very dry and cracked.  If you have sunburn, calendula can be vital to helping reduce the burn and inflammation and even prevent problems with peeling later. Various preparations (e.g. infusions, tinctures, fluid extracts) have a long use in folk medicine, particularly in the topical application to wounds, ulcers, eczema, burns, etc. and is considered one of the best herbs for treating local skin problems in first aid treatment with a lotion, poultice or compress. A native of Egypt, this Sun herb was introduced into the British Isles.  It was a staple in medieval gardens there, and Europeans brought it to America.  Colonists flavored “sallets” (cooked greens), soups, and oatmeal with calendula, and even made wine from it. A tea of fresh flowers is good for fending off a cold. An infusion of the petals makes a hair rinse that will lighten and brighten hair. Calendula symbolizes love and constancy, is great for wedding bouquets and decorations, and is useful for love potions.  An old love spell dictates that a woman should collect soil that her prospective partner has stepped on and pot it up with a calendula plant. The health of the plant indicated the health of the relationship. It’s a protection herb that is often carried with us to create positive outcomes in challenging situations. It is a magical herb to help you move what is “stuck”, both in your life and in your psyche. It supports us in bringing in and sustaining wealth. It can be wealth of money, or wealth of knowledge, wisdom, or love. A great tool to use when you want to manifest a focused intention. It was said that if the marigolds didn’t open by 7 am there would be a thunderstorm. One medieval belief about marigold was that it would strip a witch of her will. Calendula symbolizes endurance. Wreaths of marigold hung over a door are said to keep evil and negativity from entering. Dried petals can be strewn to consecrate an area or burned in consecration incense. Calendula helps us to remember our dreams, and is a good addition to dream pillows. The marigold is an important flower in certain religious ceremonies in Nepal and is used to decorate Hindu temples in India. Old lore tells of the plant’s use to grant a vision of anyone who has stolen anything from the bearer. Calendula is used to bring comfort to those who are nervous and prone to fear, as well as those who have gone through a profound shock or trauma to the system. It is used to temper anger and rash behavior. Calendula can also be used to encourage emotional warmth and tolerance, compassion, and the ability to truly listen to what others are saying. It is said that walking barefoot through marigold flowers grants an understanding of the knowledge of birds to girls. In Hoodoo, calendula is combined with other herbs (galangal root, yellow dock, carnation, snake root, and bergamot) and together with Just Judge oil and a protection nail, put into a small purple or white cloth pouch that is carried for protection during court cases and legal matters. Another Hoodoo magical item is Gambler’s Gold Lucky Seven Hand Wash, which is a decoction of alfalfa, allspice, calendula, chamomile, cinnamon, coriopsis, and Irish moss. The plant has branched stems with leaves that are roughly 2–7 inches in length, that have hair on top and bottom. The flowerheads are yellow and 1 ½ to 2 ¾ inch in diameter. The flowerhead is surrounded by two rows of hairy bracts. In the wild the plant often has a single ring of ray florets surrounding the central disc florets. The disc florets are tubular and hermaphrodite, and generally of a more intense orange-yellow color than the female, tridentate, peripheral ray florets.  The plant may flower the full length of the year if conditions are suitable. Marigold enjoys sunny (to partially sunny) locations. It is an annual in cooler climates and a perennial in warmer climates. Typically grown in cultivated gardens where it adds ornamental color, marigold is also often grown as a utilitarian herb for many therapeutic purposes.  Marigold succeeds in any well-drained soil, though it prefers a good loam. Sow seeds directly in the garden soil from spring to early summer and again in September. The seed germinates best in darkness and usually within 1 – 2 weeks at 21°C. The plant often self-sows freely. Marigold flowers are also used fresh or dried. If they are being collected for drying they are harvested when fully open, in the morning when the dew has dried, and need to be dried quickly in the shade, or in a warm over for 2-4 hours on pastry paper on a cookie sheet.  Once they are dry, remove the petals and store in a sealed jar away from light and heat which can damage the oils they contain. How to grow Pot Marigold: Barely cover the seeds to germinate in 14 days at room temperature. The best time to sow is in April, but you can sow in July for fall blooms or in fall for blooms in spring. Transplant to full sun and rich soil, planting 9″/22cm inches apart. It gets 12-18in/30-45cm tall. This annual will reseed when it’s happy.   Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
