It is one of the earliest cultivated legumes, and 9,500-year-old remains have been found in the Middle East. The chickpea is a key ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, used in hummus, and when ground into flour, falafel. It is also important in Indian cuisine, used in salads, soups and stews, and curry, in chana masala, and in other meal products like channa. Chickpeas are a complete non-animal protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. Chickpeas are a nutrient-dense food, providing rich content (20% or higher of the daily value, DV) of protein, dietary fiber, folate, and certain dietary minerals, such as iron and phosphorus in a 100 gram reference amount. Thiamin, vitamin B6, magnesium, and zinc contents are moderate, providing 10-16% of the DV. Chickpeas also contain choline, which helps your brain and nervous system run smoothly, as well as potassium, iron, and vitamins A, E, and C. Proteins in cooked and germinated chickpeas are rich in essential amino acids such as lysine, isoleucine, tryptophan, and total amino acids. 75% of the fat content is unsaturated fatty acids for which linoleic acid comprises 43% of the total fat. The folate in chickpeas is thought to increase semen production and sperm count, and also reduce sperm deformities. The zinc found in chickpeas is also believed to promote optimum levels of testosterone and healthy sperm production. Folate also plays an important role in hair growth by renewing cells that aid in hair growth. Folic acid is said to also help hair volume and even reduce the rate of premature greying. For women, it is also believed that chickpeas are high in natural estrogen, which can help create hormonal balance and ease symptoms of menopause. Chickpeas have a cleansing faculty and may help break kidney stones. Chickpeas help people lose weight because of their high fiber content (a one cup serving is roughly half the recommended daily fiber intake for adults), which makes you feel full longer and prevents overeating. The high fiber also helps prevent constipation. Chickpeas are low in sodium and are cholesterol free. They are also a good source of polyunsaturated fats, which help control (and reduce) cholesterol levels which, in turn, decreases risk of developing heart disease. Chickpeas are low on the glycemic index, which means they will not make blood sugar spike. For those with diabetes, they are said to help control blood sugar. Chickpeas are gluten-free and are ground into flour and made into chickpea pasta. Using chickpea flour as a substitute for other flours is a healthy alternative, and also may be a preference for those with celiac disease. Historical Uses: male fertility, kidney stones, weight loss, cleanse, constipation, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, low testosterone, increased sperm, estrogen, low estrogen, menopause, hair loss, female frigidity Mystical Attributes: Chickpeas help with winning competition. Chickpeas are also used for favomancy, which is the practice of using beans to predict the future by scattering them and looking for patterns in the way they have spread out. A female fortune teller (a faladzinica) recites verses from the Quran over the beans before throwing them in three bursts, representing the past, present, and future. This old Iranian tradition is still practiced in Bosnia today.
