It is a member of the rose family. The aerial parts of the plant are used to make teas, infusions, bath bags, mouthwash and topical preparations. Agrimony herb is not commonly used today, but has its place in traditional herbalism. This herb is safe in moderation for most healthy people. Agrimony was used by the Anglo-Saxons to stop bleeding and heal wounds, a practical application for those in battle. Historical Uses: insomnia, boost immunity, relieve diarrhea, astringent for bacteria-causing acne, clean sores and wounds, fight bacteria, fight viruses, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepa-protective, neuro-protective, blood purifier, clot blood, digestion, cystitis, incontinence, kidney stones, sore throat, hoarseness, rheumatism, arthritis, gout Mystical Attributes: Agrimony is regarded as powerfully magickal. One of its early names was “fairy’s wand”. At one time, Agrimony was used to detect the presence of Witches. Agrimony has been used by witches to help get rid of negative energies. Use it in all protection sachets and spells, also to banish negative energies and spirits. The powdered root can be used to erect powerful protective wards. It protects against goblins, evil and poison. It was also used by Anglo-Saxon people to create “charms and dubious preparations of blood and pounded frogs”. In an 18th-century Scottish witch trial, it was mentioned as a witch’s cure for people who were “elf shot”, or suffering an unexplained illness. Agrimony is an ally to those who specialize in defensive magic and helping those who are under psychic attack. It has long been used to reverse spells sent against the magician; i.e., it not only breaks hexes, it also sends them back to the hexer. It can be employed to heal the aura when it is damaged after a traumatic experience and for the removal of attachments. It quickly heals the aura and ensures the aura is well fortified against further damage during the healing process. It is useful for spellwork for those who need to explore their true feelings and to help balance the emotions applied to a situation. It is also used in protection spells, to help build a deflective psychic shield, to reduce the influence of another’s negativity and to banish negative energies and spirits. It is said to reverse harmful spells cast on you, causing them to rebound on the sender. It not only breaks hexes, it sends them back to the hexer. Agrimony protects against evil entities. It is useful also as a banishing smudge or as a wash to cleanse the aura. Use in all protective sachets, spells and medicine bags. It can also be burned in banishing rituals or as a wash to cleanse the aura. It is especially useful in healing magic as it enhances the strength of all healing spells, especially at a distance. You could use it in a ritual bath before beginning, as a wash for your tools, burn it as an offering or fumigant or simply decorate your alter with it. This herb is used for protection, exorcism, and divination. An old traditional use for Agrimony was to add it to pillows, or place it under the pillow to ensure a night of deep, dreamless sleep. Agrimony placed under the head will make one sleep as if dead, according to ancient lore, but don’t use this for insomnia as the sleeper won’t awaken until the herb is removed. In the past, witches did this to their sleeping spouses, enabling them to secretly attend the witches’ sabbat. Agrimony offers powerful protection from magic and dangerous spirits and is used in spells to cause sleep and to move about unnoticed. In Voodoo, Agrimony is said to turn back jinxes that have already been made, roots that have already been laid, and curses that have already been cast. Combined with Slippery Elm Bark, it is said to break spells involving Slander and Lies spread by back-biting enemies who are trying to trouble your marriage or love-life. Combined with Rue, it is said to send back the Evil Eye (Mal Occhio) even after the Eye has already taken effect. Combined with Salt, it is said to un-make Hexes and Witchcraft. Agrimony is one of the all-around best herbs for general uncrossing work, either used alone or in combination with other herbs, in preparations for bathing, burning, sprinkling, or carrying in a mojo bag. Mystical Intentions: rid negative energy, banish dangerous spirits, protect against evil entities, protection from hexes and curses, defensive magic, psychic shield, reverse and deflect harmful spells, uncrossing, banishing smudge, exorcism, divination, explore true feelings, balance emotions, heal the damaged aura after traumatic experiences, remove negative attachments, enhance healing spells, spells to cause sleep, spells to move about unnoticed, protection from bullying, protection from gossip Other Uses: Has been used as a mouthwash or gargle for sore throat or mouth sores Has been used in lotions to help treat sores and skin irritations Agrimony Herb Tea: Infuse 1 teaspoon dried Agrimony root, leaves, or flowers in 1 cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. Strain and flavor with honey and a little licorice root if desired. Take up to 1 cup per day. Taste & Smell: Agrimony has a slightly bitter lemon-like taste. The root has a pleasant smell. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Agrimony has long leaves set upon a stalk, all of them dented about the edges, green above, and greyish underneath, and a little hairy. It has one strong, round, hairy, brown stalk, two or three feet high, with smaller leaves upon it. At the top grows many yellow flowers one above another in long spikes, after which come rough heads of seeds hanging downwards, which will stick upon garments, or anything that rubs against them. The root is black, long, and somewhat woody, and shoots fresh every spring. It flowers in July and August, the seed being ripe shortly after. Agrimony is a perennial native to Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa that has naturalized to most of the US and Canada. It grows in open areas, in fields, upon banks, near the sides of hedges, and in wastelands. It prefers full sun, but the plant is sturdy and can tolerate partial shade. It is naturally adapted to growth in alkaline soil, and will require water during dry periods or it will fail to flower. Agrimony should be sown from seed in the winter, or be stratified by putting them in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks before spring planting. It can be harvested midsummer or when the flowers just come into bloom. Cut the whole plant and hang outside to dry. Or harvest the leaves as needed. The leaves, flowers, and stems can be used fresh in herbal remedies or then may be dried and stored for use at a later time. To dry, find a shaded location out of direct sunlight. Carefully spread out the leaves, flowers, and stems on a wire rack – the location should be kept dry and warm at all times. Airtight jars can be used to store the powdered and crumbled down plant material. These can be placed in storage and the powder can be used as needed.
