A nutritional powerhouse, it is used to increase stamina and endurance and help build muscle. Maca is known for its ability to promote healthy sexual function and libido for both men and women, popular around the world as a supplement for issues like low sex drive and infertility. Limited evidence suggests that Maca may help improve energy levels and enhance mood in some populations. A 2016 study in 175 people demonstrated that taking 3 grams of red or black Maca per day for 12 weeks improved mood and energy scores compared with a placebo. A 2015 study in 45 women who were experiencing antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction found that taking 3,000 mg of Maca Root per day for 12 weeks significantly improved sexual function and libido compared with a placebo. A 2010 review that included four high quality studies with a total of 131 participants found evidence that taking Maca improved sexual desire after at least 6 weeks. Some studies suggest that Maca may benefit people who are going through menopause by helping alleviate some symptoms, including hot flashes and interrupted sleep. A 2015 study in 29 postmenopausal Chinese women found that supplementing with 3.3 grams of Maca per day for 6 weeks reduced symptoms of depression compared with a placebo. Additionally, older research findings suggest that Maca may be helpful for reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression in postmenopausal women. Taking Maca supplements may help improve certain aspects of fertility in people with sperm. For example, studies have shown that taking Maca may help improve sperm concentration, or the number of sperm per milliliter of semen. Sperm concentration is closely linked to male fertility. Taking 2 grams of Maca per day for 12 weeks significantly improved semen concentration compared with a placebo. However, there was no significant difference in sperm motility (the ability of sperm to swim properly) between the supplement and placebo groups. Maca Root is a nutritional powerhouse, traditionally used for its adaptogenic and neuroprotective effects, and to promote healthy bone density and memory stabilization. Traditionally, the Andean people used maca as a food, consuming it in a fermented drink or porridge. Additionally, the Andean people used Maca for various health conditions, such as respiratory conditions and rheumatic disease. Rodent studies have demonstrated that Maca helps improve cognitive function and motor coordination and may help slow age-related cognitive decline. Findings from animal studies suggest that Maca may help reduce inflammatory proteins and inhibit BPH or enlargement of the prostate. Maca has been shown to speed up wound healing, and an older study found that it protected against UV damage when applied to the skin of animals. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Maca is a cruciferous vegetable related to broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale. In fact, Andean people have cultivated Maca for more than 2,000 years. It’s one of the few edible plants that can survive the harsh weather conditions above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) in the Peruvian Andes. Because of the rise in worldwide demand for Maca, people have begun to mass-produce this plant in other parts of the world, including the mountainous Yunnan province in China. Maca is rather easy to grow in vegetable gardens where temperatures do not stay too high for too long. The plant is biennial, hardy down to -10°C. It grows best in sunny to semi-shady areas (best in wind-exposed cooler locations) with moist, humus and nutrient-rich soil, although it can thrive in poor soil. Sow Maca seeds in May after the last frost. The seeds are easy to care for and germinate quickly. Plants sown directly into the bed develop better than pre-sown or transplanted. From mid-May onward, sow the seeds in rows with spacing of 30-40cm (12-16”). Cover with a thin layer of soil about 0.5cm thick and lightly press down. Water carefully and thoroughly. At a temperature of 15°C, the first seedlings will sprout in a few days to two weeks. Keep seeds moist until they germinate so that strong stems form. After the seeds sprout, thin out the plants if they are too dense. Leave 8-10cm space between each plant. Mulch around the plants and regularly pull out weeds. Maca usually does not require fertilizer, and can even suffer if nutrients are too high. The plants grow to 15-30cm tall (approx. 6-12”). In summer, the underground roots grow to a diameter of about 3-5cm. The root has white sweet-tasting flesh and the skin is white, yellow, red, purple, or grey to black. The small Maca roots will grow into the fall. Harvest from late summer into autumn, when the roots have a diameter of about 3cm. To harvest, grab the roots by its leaves and pull out of the soil. Remove soil from the roots with a gentle brush. The fresh roots will keep for about two weeks in the refrigerator when stored without the leaves, or will keep for several years when dried.
