Maral Root is a traditional adaptogenic herb from Russia.  It was discovered as a medicinal plant and named after maral deer, when local hunters in Altai observed the behavior of the maral deer having restored strength after eating the roots. Maral Root reduces fatigue and improves emotion. The ecdysteroid constituents (especially of 20E) found in Maral root have shown to increase strength, endurance and promote muscle growth of athletes. In clinical trails, track runners that took ecdysten (found in Maral root) orally for 20 days had an increase in their working capacity (10-15%), increase in rehabilitation during intensive physical activity, increase in muscle mass, and decrease fat content compared to controls. Maral root may protect certain parts of the brain from excitotoxicity.  Maral root may also help protect the brain during stroke.  For example, maral root can prevent the destructive changes and decreased the density of synapses in the cerebral cortex after stroke. N-feruloylserotonins found in Maral root may have stress-reducing properties in those with anxiety. Maral root can also protect against alcohol-induced intoxication.  For example, in a study in those who took Maral root during alcohol consumption, they had less gastrointestinal symptoms and depressive effects than controls. Alpha-amyrin found in Maral root may help protect the liver from acetaminophen-induced injuries. Alpha-amyrin may also help wound healing. Maral Root may improve skin quality. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:   Maral plants (Leuzea Rhapontica) are a broadleaf deciduous large perennial plant. The blue foliage is large rosettes of large mid-green leaves that can be up to 2 feet long and are deeply incised with pointed edges. In late spring, the plant puts up thick round stems up to two feet tall topped with large solitary purple flowers that can be 3 inches across. The plants produce many stalks with the large showy thistle like flowers. Maral flowers in the second year from seed and sends down large thick roots which strongly establish the plant in the ground. It is attractive to bees, butterflies, and deer. Deer will eat it to the ground. Maral grows best in USDA zones 4a-8b. It prefers full sun or mostly sun in a cooler climate. It needs sheltered from the heat but as much sun as possible. The plant likes regular or occasional water, and well-drained, rich and fertile, average and alkaline soil, with a lot of organic material. Mulching also helps. Water once a week in the summer and don’t let it dry out. Maral will grow in a clay pot as long as it does not become too waterlogged in winter. If growing from seed, sow in individual pots in mid-winter for spring planting. Maral will germinate at fairly low temperatures so don’t apply heat. A cold frame or unheated indoor area is ideal. Germination is usually within 2-3 weeks depending upon conditions. Grow until large enough to plant outside after danger of frost has passed. Plant where the roots can grow deeply and they may not be easy to move. Space plants about 2 feet apart as it grows quickly and will take up quite a bit of space. Once established, it needs little or no maintenance, as long as it has enough water. Clear away leaves in the fall. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding.
