It was worn as an amulet of protection against evil forces and demons. This is the feminine side of the balance. In Asian cultures, the Moon is the Yin, and the Sun is the Yang. The Sun symbolizes energy, physical survival, power and strength. In Christianity, Jesus is sometimes represented as the Sun, symbolizing power and resurrection.
