The plant is also the source of witch hazel extract, an astringent liquid sold in just about any pharmacy in the U.S. used topically to cleanse and clarify skin, and to remove makeup and oil from the skin. It is also good to use as an aftershave, and for soothing bug bites. Which hazel has long been used as a poultice for bruises and swellings. It is also sometimes used topically to relieve varicose veins. Some people apply witch hazel to skin for itching. Applying diluted witch hazel water may temporarily relieve burning from hemorrhoids and other anal disorders. Witch hazel’s astringent properties tighten pores and reduce sweat production. It lowers the skin’s pH, making it harder for odor-causing bacteria to survive. Witch hazel is a good alternative to synthetic deodorants, especially for people with skin sensitivities or chemical allergies. For sunburn, topical application of witch hazel extract can produce a significant reduction in skin temperature and vasoconstrictive activity. Witch hazel’s branches are yielding and pliable, making good bows for archers. Historical Uses: astringent, acne, blackheads, bruising, swelling, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, sunburn, insect bites and stings, itching, body odor, foot odor, hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating Mystical Attributes: Witch Hazel can be used for dowsing. It gets its name from being commonly used to craft divination rods. Because it chases water, divining rods are usually made of witch hazel. Witch hazel twigs are used to locate water underground. A wand made of witch hazel quickly opens the line of communication between the priest or priestess and the gods. Witch hazel can be burned or made into an herbal elixir to banish unwanted emotions and to remove hexes, disease, and general negativity. Brew the leaves into a tea and use it as a body wash when quick purification is needed. Its bark and twigs can be used to fight off evil forces, and it can be placed in sachets and charms to heal a broken heart. Witch hazel can temper passions as it is an herb of chastity. Native Americans used the seeds to divine whether or not a patient would recover from a certain illness. Mystical Intentions: cleansing, purification, negative thoughts, mental clarity, balancing emotions, negative energy, protection from evil, uncrossing, removing hexes, removing curses, banishing, protection from illness, health and healing, divination, chastity, broken heart, magic wand making, dowsing Smell: Witch hazel has an earthy, botanical, and medicinal astringent aroma. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Witch hazel grows best in well-drained, moist soil that’s rich in organic matter. It can tolerate a wide range of pH, but prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.5. You can improve heavy clay soils by adding organic matter and planting on a slight mound. Witch hazel can grow in full sun or partial shade, but flowers best in full sun. In partial shade, it will have a more open branching habitat. Witch hazel is best planted between October and April, but you can plant container-grown witch hazel at any time. Avoid planting if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Water young plants regularly, and cover the root zone with mulch to keep the soil moist. Witch hazel becomes more drought tolerant once they are well rooted. Prune minimally, as it grows slowly and eventually makes a large spreading shrub. Regular fertilization is not essential, but you can fertilize with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer in spring before leaves emerge. Allow enough space for the plant to develop naturally, as witch hazel can grow to be large and spreading. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Witch hazel can be irritating to skin. Witch hazel contains safrole, which can be cancer-causing but in small amounts should not be of concern.
