They are a common orange grown in Italy. The anthocyanins – which give the orange its distinct maroon color – will only develop when temperatures are low at night, as during the Mediterranean fall and winter.  Blood oranges cultivated in the United States are in season from December to March (Texas), and from November to May (California). Blood Orange Oil is similar to (Sweet) Orange oil in uses and scent, but Blood Orange has a richer citrus aroma. It is often used to help energize and lift mood and combat depressed feelings and moodiness. The oil can be applied sparingly to skin to help reduce inflammation and redness, as well as aches and pains. Because of its antioxidant properties, it slows the rate of skin damage experienced from UV exposure and pollution.
