Botany & Cultivation:  Cordyceps Mushrooms are a fungus that has long been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Tibetan Medicine. Historically thought to be magical by the Chinese, Cordyceps is not a traditional mushroom. Cordyceps Militaris is a parasitic fungus that infects a caterpillar (and other various insects), kills it, then grows a club-shaped mushroom out of its head. In photos, you’ll see the dead caterpillar with a growth that can sometimes be as long as its body sticking out of its head. The name “Cordyceps” comes from Latin and means “club” and “head”. Real wild Cordyceps must be collected by hand from high altitudes above 3,800 meters in Tibet (Sikkim), the Himalayan Mountains and surrounding areas. Wild Cordyceps is the most expensive mushroom in the world (costing over $20,000-$40,000/kg), only sprouts a few weeks a year in the spring, and is typically harvested between April and August. It is almost exclusively sold in Asia. Commercially available Cordyceps Militaris is cultivated from grains and barley into a fruiting body (or “mushroom”) and contains up to 90 times more cordycepin than the Sinensis species. This and other commercially available Cordyceps Sinensis extracts are not true mushroom, and are made from Mycelium on grain (not from insects). Contraindications & Toxicity: Overuse of Cordyceps may result in nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth. Avoid if you have cancer, diabetes, an autoimmune disease, or a bleeding disorder.
