Tongkat ali’s potential to increase testosterone in men with low levels of this primary sex hormone is well known and well documented.  A 1-month study in 76 older men with low testosterone found that taking 200 mg of Tongkat Ali extract per day significantly increased levels of this hormone to normal values in over 90% of participants.  What’s more, studies in both animals and humans show that taking Tongkat Ali stimulates sexual arousal and may improve erectile dysfunction in men.  Finally, Tongkat Ali may improve sperm motility and concentration, boosting male fertility. Tongkat Ali may lower stress hormones in your body, decrease anxiety, and improve mood.  A 1-month study in 63 adults with moderate stress found that supplementing with 200 mg of Tongkat Ali extract per day reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol in saliva by 16%, compared to those who received a placebo.  Participants also reported significantly less stress, anger, and tension after taking Tongkat Ali. Tongkat Ali is often claimed to boost athletic performance and increase muscle mass and body composition. This is because it contains compounds called quassinoids, including eurycomaoside, eurycolactone, and eurycomanone, which may help your body use energy more efficiently, reduce fatigue, and improve endurance. In other words, the supplement may act as an ergogenic aid, which is a substance that can enhance physical performance and improve body composition. A small, 5-week study in 14 men participating in a strength training program found that those who took 100 mg of Tongkat Ali extract per day experienced significantly greater increases in lean body mass than those taking a placebo.  What’s more, a 5-week study in 25 active older adults discovered that supplementing with 400 mg of Tongkat Ali extract daily significantly increased muscular strength, compared to a placebo. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Tongkat Ali (aka Longjack or Malaysian Ginseng) is a rare slender evergreen shrub native to Southeast Asia, where it grows in the wild under story of lowland forests in Indonesia and the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, where high humidity and acidic soil helps the plant flourish in low light and shade. It is a small shrub that can easily be grown in a container, but can grow if allowed to 33 feet tall. The stems and leaves spiral away from the tree’s branchlike trunk. There are up to 30 oval leaflets on each long stalk. Flower stalks grow from the leaf axils. Its fruits are reddish small drupes that resemble grape tomatoes. All parts of Tongkat Ali are used as supplements, but the bark and roots are harvested most frequently. Young plants need shade or part shade to develop a strong root system, but will do well with more sun exposure over time. Longjack is not self-pollinating, which is not an issue if just growing to harvest the roots. However, if growing from seed, growing multiple plants lends the best luck at pollination. Tongkat Ali shrubs are fast-growing. They are hardy in zones 9-11 (with protection from frost until established), and 4 if grown in a patio or greenhouse. It can be grown under shade, but can also be planted in the open field as long as there is adequate water and nutrients. It can be planted in many types of soils, provided they drain freely and have high organic content (fertilized peat is a good choice). If planting in a garden, clear and break up the earth and loosen topsoil. Seeds taken from the red fruits can be used for propagation, which will germinate in around seven weeks when sown into a sandy medium. Seedlings can be transferred into polybags. Once transferred, the seedlings need to be kept in a nursery environment for up to six months. To plant, dig holes into soil prepared with fertilizer (phosphate, magnesium and chicken dung). The best time to plant is at the start of the rainy season. After planting, water gently and ensure the ground is not waterlogged. Once the plant is about a year old, use an NPK fertilizer and chicken dung separately at different times throughout the year to maintain good health and growth. Use insecticides to protect from moth larvae and scale insects. After around three years, the plant should start to flower and bear fruit. This is when the roots can be harvested. They should be washed and dried in the sun before use. Contraindications & Toxicity: Avoid use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Some supplements may contain mercury. Use of high amounts have potential of damaging gastrointestinal DNA. May cause side effects in people with certain cancers, heart disease, and those taking blood glucose medications.
