Description:  Emerald is a gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl, colored green by the trace amounts of chromium or sometimes vanadium. This member of the beryl family ranks among the traditional “big four” gems along with diamonds, rubies and sapphires. In the 1960s, the American jewelry industry changed the definition of Emerald to include the green vanadium-bearing beryl. As a result, vanadium Emeralds purchased as Emeralds in the United States are not recognized as such in the United Kingdom and Europe. In America, the distinction between traditional Emeralds and the new vanadium kind is often reflected in the use of terms such as “Colombian Emerald”. The word Emerald is derived from Vulgar Latin (informal Latin) and means “green gem”. Emeralds can be found in shades of bluish-green, grayish-green, to green. Emeralds in antiquity were mined in Ancient Egypt at locations on Mount Smaragdus since 1500 BC, and India and Austria since at least the 14th century AD. Mining in Egypt ceased with the discovery of the Colombian deposits. Today, only ruins remain in Egypt. Colombia is by far the world’s largest producer of Emeralds, constituting 50-95% of the world production, with the number depending on the year, source and grade. The three main Emerald mining areas in Colombia are Muzo, Coscuez, and Chivor. Rare “trapiche” Emeralds are found in Colombia, distinguished by ray-like spokes of dark impurities. Zambia is the world’s second biggest producer, with its Kafubu River area deposits (Kagem Mines) about 28 miles southwest of Kitwe. Emeralds are found all over the world in countries such as Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, the United States, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. In the US, Emeralds have been found in Connecticut, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, and South Carolina. In 1998, Emeralds were discovered in the Yukon Territory of Canada. CLEANSING AND CHARGING Be sure to cleanse your Emerald when received, and charge with your own energy and intentions. Use your feather fan to waft over it the smoke of purifying incense. Use sound vibrations from a singing bowl, bells, or tingsha chimes while quickly and carefully passing through the flame of a Green, Pink or Black candle. Place in a (preferably Selenite or Clear Quartz, just not any kind of metal) bowl on top of a bed of dead sea salt and leave soaking in the moonlight for at least four hours. Remove from the bowl, rinse for 30 seconds in (ideally natural, like a stream or in the rain) running water, then gently dry with a cloth (BE CAREFUL with stones that may easily scratch). Hold in your left hand (if wearing for receiving intentions) or right hand (if wearing for emitting intentions) and meditate your intentions and energy onto the stones for half an hour. Alternatively, cleanse by smudging then holding under running water (or leaving out in rainwater) for at least 30 seconds, dry, and gently place in a bed of sea salt on a windowsill after sunset for a few hours.
