The plant helps to stabilize soil and protects it against erosion, but it can also protect fields against pests and weeds. Its fibrous properties make it useful for handicrafts, ropes and more. Vetiver has favorable qualities for animal feed. From the roots, oil is extracted and used for perfumes, cosmetics, aromatherapy, herbal skincare, creams, and ayurvedic soap. More common in fragrances for men, vetiver is contained in 90% of Western perfumes. In Indonesia, the roots of vetiver are widely used in the production of fragrant mats. In the Philippines and India, the roots are woven to make fragrant-smelling fans called “sandal root fans”. The roots are ground and added to incense mixtures to give them an earthy, sensual scent. Vetiver is sometimes used topically for relieving stress and nervousness, as well as for emotional traumas and shock, lice, and repelling insects. It is also used for arthritis, stings, and burns. Added to massage oil, vetiver can help ease joint and muscle pain, and help relieve insomnia. Vetiver extracts can help repel termites. Vetiver grass alone, unlike the extracts, does not repel termites unless the roots are damaged. Historical Uses: aromatherapy, insect repellant, insect bites and stings, stress, burnout, shock, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), nervousness, restlessness, stuttering, tension, workaholism, irritability, depression, head lice, arthritis, burns, general aches and pains, joint pain, muscle pain, physical exhaustion, insomnia, sleeplessness, nightmares Mystical Attributes: Garlands made of vetiver grass are used to adorn the murti of Lord Nataraja (Shiva) in Hindu temples. It is a favorite offering to Ganesha. Vetiver is associated with the sefiroth Geburah in Kabbalah, which represents justice, righteousness, and the will to avenge. Geburah is considered to be the left arm of YHWH, while Hesed is the right arm, representing compassion and mercy. The tension between the two is seen as the source of human growth, similar to the tension between Yin and Yang, Love and Power, and Eros and Thanatos. Indigenous populations would burn vetiver roots in ceremonies to cleanse the body and refresh the mind. Vetiver is believed to have a direct effect on the subconscious mind, enhancing dreams, spirituality, and connection to the Divine. Vetiver is uplifting and helps maintain emotional calm, especially when flashbacks are experienced (the essential oil is called the Oil of Tranquility). Vetiver can be helpful in processing grief and promotes restful sleep and calm dreams. It is said to help in overcoming negative difficult times. Mystical Intentions: emotional balance, mental clarity, trauma, grief, sadness, negative thoughts, resilience, overcoming obstacles, divination, dream magick, spirituality, travel to the other world, cleansing, justice, righteousness, fairness, revenge, divine masculine, virility Smell: A rich, warm, masculine, earthy, woody, fresh cut grass scent. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Vetiver is a fragrant perennial bunchgrass. It grows to 5 feet high and forms clumps as wide. Under favorable conditions, the erect culms (grass stems) can reach three meters in height. The stems are tall and the leaves are long, thin, and rather rigid. The flowers are brownish-purple. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontally spreading, mat-like root systems, vetiver’s roots grow downward, 7-13 feet in depth. Vetiver has a gregarious habit and grows in tufts. Shoots growing from the underground crown make the plant frost and wildfire resistant, and allow it to survive heavy grazing pressure. The leaves can become up to 10 feet long and 3/8 inches wide. The panicles are 6-12 inches long and have whorled 1-2 inch long branches. The spikelets are in pairs, and there are three stamens. The plant stems are erect and stiff. They can survive deep water flow. Under clear water, the plant can survive up to two months. The root system of vetiver is finely structured and very strong. It can grow 10-13 feet deep within the first year. Vetiver has neither stolons nor rhizomes. Because of all these characteristics, the vetiver plant is highly drought-tolerant and can help to protect soil against sheet erosion. In case of sediment deposition, new roots can grow out of buried nodes. Sandy loam soils are preferred. Clay loam is acceptable, but clay is not. It is best to plant on slightly sloping land to avoid waterlogging and overwatering. A flat site is acceptable, but watering must be monitored to avoid waterlogging, which stunts the growth of young plants. Mature vetiver, however, thrives under waterlogged conditions. Vetiver accepts soil pH from 3.3 to 1.5. Shading affects vetiver growth, but partial shading is acceptable. It is tolerant to temperatures from 15 to 55°C (59 to 131°F), depending on growing region. The optimal soil temperature for root growth is 25°C (77°F). Root dormancy occurs under a temperature of 5°C (41°F). Under frosty conditions, shoots become dormant and purple, or even die, but the underground growing points survive and can regrow quickly if conditions improve. Overhead irrigation is recommended for the first few months after planting. More mature plants prefer flood irrigation. Weed control may be needed during establishment phase, by using atrazine after planting. Hedges are cut to 3 cm above ground at the end of the growing season. Originally from India, vetiver is widely cultivated in tropical regions. The major vetiver producers include Haiti, India, Indonesia, and Réunion. The oil steam-distilled from the roots is amber brown and viscous. The best quality oil is obtained from 18-24 month old roots. The roots are dug up, cleaned, and then dried. Before distillation, the roots are chopped and soaked in water. The distillation process can take up to 24 hours. After the distillate separates into the essential oil and hydrosol, the oil is skimmed off and allowed to age for a few months to allow some undesirable notes formed during distillation to dissipate. Vetiver’s odor develops and improves with aging. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or breast-feeding. Vetiver may cause miscarriage. Consuming vetiver can cause abortion and induce menstruation. Keep out of reach of children and pets. May cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities.
