Poppy Seed Oil (Papaver Somniferum) – CARRIER OIL

Description ShareTweetPinLinkedInPrintEmail Poppy Seed Oil (Papaver Somniferum) COMMON NAME :  Poppy SCIENTIFIC NAME :   Papaver Somniferum OTHER NAMES :  Breadseed Poppy FAMILY :  Papaveraceae METAPHYSICAL / SPIRITUAL ASSOCIATIONS & CORRESPONDENCES : Element: Water Planet: Moon Day: Monday Direction: West Zodiac Sign: Aries Chakra: 6th Third Eye Chakra (Ajna) Energy: Yin Gender: Feminine Tarot Card: the High Priestess tarot Sabbat or Holiday: Samhain (Oct 31 – Nov 1) Deity or God / Goddess Association: Hekate, Nyx, Morpheus, Hypnos   Ingredients:  100% Pure Organic Cold Pressed Poppy Seed Oil Description:  The opium poppy is listed in Schedule II of the United States Controlled Substances Act, but can be grown legally in the United States as a seed crop or ornamental flower. The poppy is grown as an agricultural crop on a large scale, for one of three primary purposes: to produce poppy seeds, to produce opium (for use mainly by the pharmaceutical industry), and to produce other alkaloids (mainly thebaine and oripavine) that are processed by pharmaceutical companies into drugs such as hydrocodone and oxycodone. Latex oozes from incisions made on the green seed pods and is collected once dry. Tincture of opium (“laudanum”, a tincture of opium containing approximately 10% powdered opium by weight, prepared by dissolving extracts from the opium poppy in ethanol alcohol) is one of many unapproved drugs regulated by the U.S. FDA. Raw opium contains about 8-14% morphine by dry weight. It is also used directly or chemically modified to produce semi-synthetic opioids such as heroin. Today, many varieties have been bred that do not produce a significant quantity of opium. Whole poppy seeds are harvested from opium poppy, the flowering plant that brought sleep to Dorothy in the classic tale, The Wizard of Oz. Although the plant has long been cultivated for opium, it has also been grown specifically for its seeds since the Bronze Age. Poppy seeds are an important food item and the source of poppy seed oil. The seeds contain very low levels of opiates and the oil extracted from them contains even less. However, consuming poppy seeds can cause a false positive result on a urinalysis test. Poppy seeds are used by bakers to decorate their products and are commonly used sprinkled into or on bagels, muffins, etc. often in combination with lemon. It is also often used in salad dressings, pastas, chutneys, curries, kormas, roasted root vegetables, casseroles, au gratin dishes, cranberry salad, and to make a paste for pastries. Poppy seeds are rich in fiber, essential omega-6 fatty acids, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, thiamin, folate, and zinc. Poppy seeds are believed to be a natural blood purifier and are loaded with iron, which helps to increase red blood count in the body. They are also believed to help lower inflammation and infections of the scalp. Unwashed poppy seeds are added to teas to help ease anxiety and promote sleep. Poppy seed tea is made by soaking large amounts of unwashed poppy seeds in water or lemon juice. The seed pods contain morphine and codeine, and the seeds are coated with small amounts of these opioids, which remain in the liquid when the seeds are removed. People drink this tea to feel a natural high or to treat pain or anxiety. Drinking poppy seed tea increases the risk of opioid overdose and can potentially lead to misuse and opioid disorder. The tea can also contain lethal amounts of morphine. Some people use it as their main source of opioids. Others use it to cope with withdrawal from other opioids such as heroin. The effects of the tea can begin within 15 minutes and last up to 24 hours. Used topically, poppy seed oil is moisturizing to skin and hair, and can help combat dryness and brittleness. Historical Uses:  pain relief, opiate, narcotic, sleeplessness, insomnia, anxiety, addiction, opioid withdrawal, dry skin, dry hair, blood purification, anemia Mystical Attributes:  Poppies have a long history of use in both magic and medicine and have been used for their ability to bring calm, ease pain, and induce sleep. The smoke of poppy seeds has been used in divination and is a wonderful New Moon or Full Moon incense. Use black seeds (also called blue) for the New Moon and use white seeds (commonly found in Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine) for the Full Moon. Poppy seed incense pops and snaps when burned, making for an active and engaging divining session. The Moon aspect in combination with the seeds’ appearance also makes them a good representation of night or the fertile subconscious. The copious seeds of this Moon plant are an excellent symbol for female fertility. For the spring festival of Purim, Jews make delicious uterus-shaped cookies stuffed with these seeds to represent “eggs”. Because of poppy’s association with the Underworld, they are a nice ingredient in Cakes for the Living/Dead or items prepared for Hekate’s Supper. Add poppy seeds to a love sachet or charm, use them to stuff a poppet for sympathetic magic, or even sprinkle a few in your bath to help overcome grief. Poppy seeds were thought to be included in witches’ flying ointments to counter some of the adverse effects of deadly nightshade (belladonna) and also to be an antidote for its poison. Mystical Intentions:  divination, moon rituals, female fertility, travel to the underworld, astral projection, sleeping spells, grief, calm, calling ancestors, communicating with spirits of the dead Taste & Smell:  Poppy seeds have a nutty taste that becomes spicy-sweet with heat. Ground poppy seeds smell smoky and sweet, like a freshly rolled cigar. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting:  Papaver Somniferum is an annual herb growing to about 40 inches tall. The plant has a strong greyish-green appearance, and the stem and leaves bear a sparse distribution of coarse hairs. The large leaves are lobed, the upper stem leaves clasping the stem, the lowest leaves with a short petiole. The flowers are up to 1-4 inches diameter, normally with four white, mauve or red petals, sometimes with dark markings at the base. The fruit is a hairless, rounded capsule topped with 12-18 radiating stigmatic rays, or fluted cap. All parts of the plant exude white latex when wounded. The native range of opium poppy is probably the Eastern Mediterranean, but extensive cultivation and introduction of the species throughout Europe since ancient times have obscured its origin. It has escaped from cultivation, or has been introduced and become naturalized extensively in all regions of the British Isles, particularly in the south and east and in almost all other countries of the world with suitable, temperate climates. Contraindications & Toxicity: Do not use if pregnant or nursing. May cause allergic reaction. Drinking poppy seed tea is possibly unsafe. Consuming large amounts of poppy seeds is possibly unsafe and may block the bowels. Consumption may cause a false positive urinalysis test.   Constituents: Fat, Dietary Fibre, Protein, Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids, Linoleic Acid May contain traces of opium alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, noscapine, and papaverine)     Sources: https://spiritartsandherbs.com/sources **IMPORTANT INFORMATON: Products are sold as curio items for entertainment purposes only and based upon historical and magical uses.  We do not imply or guarantee that any items provide specific abilities, powers, outcomes, remedies, or treatments.
