The pigment is abundant at the surface in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was used in prehistoric and ancient times by many different civilizations on different continents. It was used in body painting, rock painting, on artefacts and sometimes even on sand. Evidence of the processing of ochre in Africa and Europe has been dated by archaeologists to 300,000 years ago, evidence of use in Australia dated to 50,000 years ago, and evidence in Asia dated to 40,000 years ago. Pieces of ochre engraved with abstract designs have been found at Blombos Cave in South Africa, dated to around 75,000 years ago. In Wales, the paleolithic burial called the Red Lady of Paviland from its coating of red ochre has been dated to around 33,000 years ago. Paintings of animals made with ochre pigments have been found in paleolithic sites at Pech Merle in France dated around 25,000 years ago. The cave of Altamira in Spain about 17,000 to 18,500 years ago. The Ancient Picts were said to paint themselves “Iron Red”. Frequent reference in Irish myth to “red men” make it likely that such a practice was common to the Celts of the British Isles. In Noongar culture, ochre was either sprinkled on dry or mixed with water or saliva in the mouth or sprayed on wounds. Ochre was mixed with emu or goanna fat to make an ointment, similar in many ways to zinc ointment, and was used to treat wounds and a range of skin conditions. Primitive cultures used it as a medicinal salve to prevent sunburn, clean hair, repel insects, and preserve leather. Many indigenous cultures still use red ochre for these purposes today, including the Himba people of northern Namibia, who mix ochre with butterfat to make an otjize paste as a protective coat for their hair and skin. Ancient Egyptians used red ochre as a medicinal salve for intestinal and eye problems. Red ochre has been used for thousands of years to improve and protect skin from damage and irritation. It is also a natural sunscreen. The high content of minerals such as quartz and iron help to replenish and protect the condition of the skin. Historical Uses:  skin conditions, sunscreen, wound healing Mystical Attributes:  Red Ochre is believed to possess magical powers. Warriors in many tribes covered weapons, objects, animals, and trees in red ochre, believing it would lend them magical, supernatural powers. Neolithic burials may have used red ochre pigments symbolically, either to represent a return to the earth or possibly as a form of ritual rebirth, in which the color may symbolize blood and a hypothesized Great Goddess. Pre-European people used red ochre to decorate the corpses of their dead. Early cultures scattered it over the graves of the dead as a form of respectful ritual, seeping into the ground and even staining their bones, signaling a return to the earth or rebirth in the afterlife. In early cultures, red ochre’s colors resemblance to blood linked it to fertility, life and growth. In Greco-Roman culture, it was associated with power and valour. Roman soldiers painted their bodies entirely in red to celebrate victories fought and won. Ancient Egyptian men and women dyed their clothing and painted their bodies with red ochre during celebrations, associating it with life, health and victory.
