Description: The fresh root is especially fragrant, but it has to be dried to be infused in oil. The fresh root smells a little more citrusy; the dried root is spicier and warmer. Calamus root has been used as an incense for the illuminating, strengthening, and stimulating effects it has on the mind. It has been burned during meditation and ritual to increase concentration. Acorus Calamus is a flowering plant with psychoactive chemicals. Calamus Root has historically been believed to be a “truth serum”. It has a sedative effect, and both energizes and reduces anxiety, thus why it is considered a powerful balancing herb. It fights fatigue, while also having a calming effect. Though the two effects would seem to contradict each other, the effect is one of alert relaxation. In India, the herb is also known as Vacha, which means “to make clear”. It is known for enhancing mental clarity, stimulating the brain, helping alertness, aiding memory loss, mental fogginess, lack of focus, nervousness, anxiety, and for relieving circular thoughts. It has also been used for speech defects like stuttering and stammering. As a topical, the root has been made into a paste and applied in arthritis, neuralgia, and skin infections. Calamus is a well-known commanding and compelling ingredient in African American Hoodoo formulas and has been used as an aphrodisiac and stimulant. Its use in Hoodoo formulas is possibly based on the Old Testament. In a passage in Exodus 30:22-38, God gives Moses instructions to create a holy anointing oil. Calamus is one of the ingredients in this oil used to anoint the ark of the covenant and the tabernacle, where the most sacred and holy religious texts were kept. Individuals also applied the ointment to themselves before entering the tabernacle, which would have had an empowering effect, rendering the wearer holy. The root contains high concentrations of essential oils. Its psychoactive properties are attributed to the presence of asarone. Calamus also contains safrole. Historical Uses: circular thoughts, Alzheimer’s disease, memory, focus, anti-depressant, stress, energy, fatigue, calm, relaxation, anxiety, sedative, motion sickness, headache, antimicrobial, antifungal, antibacterial, euphoric, insomnia, nervousness, stuttering, alertness Mystical Attributes: The seeds may be strung as beads into necklace for healing. The root is also powdered for healing incenses and sachets. It also strengthens and binds spells. Calamus is a perfect herbal oil for meditation, as advised by the sages. When used during aromatherapy, it clears mental blockages. It instills a feeling of calmness. This healing herb can also help you better express yourself from the depth of your consciousness. By calming the mind and boosting confidence, it may help people speak more clearly. Keep pieces of the root in the corners of your kitchen to guard against poverty and hunger. It may also be grown in the garden for luck. Use the powder to bless any space. Add Calamus to the bath as an aphrodisiac. This magic herb is said to be stimulant and warming, not sedative and cooling. Sweet flag is one of the ingredients in the ritual incense (ketoret) mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (Exodus XXX:34-38) and burned twice daily in the Temple. Versions of ketoret have long been incorporated into ritual magick, in particular in work connected to contacting one’s holy guardian angel. Sweet cane, a synonym for calamus, is named as an ingredient in the Biblical anointing oil as well as in oil of Abramelin, which appears to be based on the Biblical oil. Although calamus has a firm place in white magic, it is named after a young man who was in love with another man who drowned; he mourned for so long at the bank of the stream where his love was lost that the gods felt mercy on him and turned him into a reed. Inspired partly by that myth and partly by the very phallic shape of this plant’s flowers, Walt Whitman wrote a series of poems about male/male love called the Calamus series. The root of the plant is the part used in the creation of coercive formulas, often paired with licorice root. This combination forms the basis of many compelling formulas of mastery, to which other herbs may be added to determine the type of influence one wishes to have. The root is powdered before being added to a spell or ritual oil. Like many other herbs with commanding properties, calamus may also be used to strengthen and bind spells. Calamus brings a forceful will to whatever it is added to. Growing the plant brings good luck to the gardener. Mystical Intentions: anointing, love, lust, affection, truth serum, healing, strengthen spells, bind spells, protect from poverty, protect from hunger, luck, blessings, aphrodisiac, ketoret incense, contacting your guardian angel, oil of Abramelin, coercive magic, coercion, compelling spells, commanding spells, money spells, luck in gardening, meditation, confidence, memory, mental abilities Smell: Calamus Root has a refreshing scent similar to cinnamon. Botany, Cultivation & Harvesting: Calamus is native to India and North America and naturalized in Europe, Australia, Siberia, China, Japan and Indonesia. Calamus is 1-4′ tall, produces tiny greenish-yellow flowers in a diamond-shaped pattern, but does not bear fruit. Each flower has 6 tepals and 6 stamens. The leaves are stem-less, shaped like spears and arranged in dual rows. The root system consists of shallow branching rhizomes that are stout and knobby; they have a brown exterior and white interior. A tuft of basal leaves occur at intervals along these rhizomes, while coarse fibrous roots develop below. The rhizome yields an oil that is highly fragrant and imparts a bitter flavor. The blooming period occurs from late spring to early summer and lasts about a month. Both the crushed foliage and rootstocks have a pleasant aromatic fragrance. This plant spreads vegetatively by its rhizomes and often forms colonies. Calamus grows in part to full sun in sedge meadows that are prone to flooding, edges of small lakes and ponds, marshes, swamps, seeps and springs, and wetland restorations. Calamus prefers to grow in wet mucky ground or shallow water along shores. This species is semi-aquatic. Calamus is best propagated by division. Divide the roots anytime except during active flowering for best results. Harvest calamus root in late autumn or early spring. Choose only roots that are under 3 years old as older roots tend to become tough and hollow. Dry the roots completely and cut into small pieces or grind into powder. Store in airtight containers in a cool, dry place. How to grow Acorus calamus: Sow in a paper towel that has been wet and wrung out. Fold over and put in a plastic baggie and put in the fridge for four weeks. They will not sprout in the fridge, but when you take them out and plant them, they should sprout right away (see this method explained in detail). Or sow on Winter Solstice (see the Solstice Sowing page). This perennial plant does not have to grow in the water; it will grow perfectly well in moist soil. It can get up to 6ft/1.8m tall but can be grown in pots if you wish and will not get over 2ft/61cm tall. It needs rich soil, so when you transplant, make sure you use the best-grade potting soil and plenty of composted cow manure (Black Cow is great). Plant out in partial sun in moist soil. It will get its phallic flower mass in May, June, and July if it is growing in water and happy. Harvest when the leaves turn yellow. Save part of the rhizome to replant–it will grow much faster from a rhizome. Chop the rhizome before drying it, as it will be quite hard when dried and chopping will help prevent mold.
